Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Rat Press is everything that film is not. It's the biographies written by directors. It's the interviews with actors and producers. It's the novels and scripts and photographs and artworks that come from the most prolific individuals in film, but which you never have the opportunity to see in a theater. Our series aims to make this part of film history available to everyone.

I enjoyed looking at all the pictures in this book. I found it interesting looking thru the photographer's eyes. If you are looking for alot of celebrity pics this book is not for you. There are some but Mr. Caan's focus seems to be elsewhere. There are alot of partially nude pics but they are not raunchy...they are what they are.
If you want to see the world thru someone elses eyes this book is for you, enjoy it.

I have come to really appreciate Scott Caan as a very talented actor and recently saw that he is also a good writer, (he wrote the script for the film "Mercy"). Now here is an excellent example of his interesting talent in the field of photography. I found the book to contain a very varied and comprehensive collection of artistic photos. He seems to find his subjects everywhere...not only on movie sets but in everyday life. I highly recommend this for aficionados of photo art.

This book is large with good quality photos and is split into different sections, by subject. His photos are honest and natural and my favourites are the photos he took of friends, or while out and about on his travels. The almost nude girls are by no means offensive, but I think there are just too many of them and I got bored after the first ten. I would have preferred to see more of his other photography instead. Overall, a nice easygoing book that I enjoyed looking through.

You might know Scott Caan from the silver screen, but there's more to this Golden Globe nominee than good looks and excellent comedic timing. I could wax lyrical about his acting talent for hours - I could even go on for hours about his writing talent as well - 3 movies under his belt, plays as well... speaking of films, while Scott was making his debut as writer/director for the film "Dallas 362", his father, the legendary James Caan, gave him a present - a Nikon camera gifted to him by Francis Ford Coppola.

Scott never looked back. In his introduction, Scott explains his attraction to photography, his personal visual art of choice; one that cannot be changed or edited - well, not without today's technology. Harder to be edited to someone else's point of view than a novel or a play, a script or a performance. Purity at it's best from a creative perspective. His love of women is certainly captured in his photographs, but he manages to show the beauty of the female form, giving us a glimpse of the world through his eyes. Moments captured in time without being posed for or just the world around him, he is able to elicit emotion from a single photograph; to invoke a depth of feeling you didn't know possible for people you never knew existed. Family, friends, lovers, strangers and fans... blurred photos and focused. Scott has a knack for black & white - a genre that is harder to excel in without understanding light and exposure. Closing the book at the end of your first viewing can leave you breathless, or even change the way you yourself will look at the world around you the next time you leave your own home.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking this journey through Scott's memories, and look forward to the next volume.
