The Scottevest Travel Vest is perhaps one of the most hyped travel vests these days, due to some terrific marketing.

My husband has worn these vests for a long time, and they used to be great. But like many products they have shipped off the making of them, and change according to who bids the work lowest I guess.

If you get a perfect item & have no problems, I imagine they still are great. But the customer service is HORRID. Last year he ordered one to replace the old ones. There were issues with the sizes - what was sent didn't fit, so he called to exchange them. We had to wait, pay all the shipping and deal with less than helpful people. Once he got the right size, the vests were great - not quite the same as the very first ones in terms of quality workmanship, but still extremely useful.

This year he decided to order two more. Figured after last year he now knew exactly what to order and there would be no issues. Wrong. The material and cut of the vest is totally different. They don't fit right so he is back to trying another size. And back to dealing with their rude customer service and paying lots of money to (hopefully) get a vest that fits and is well made.

Will update when we get the latest issue resolved.
Have read in some other reviews for their products that it is best to buy through Amazon so that you get a extra layer of support and protection. I can see why folks say that!!!

The Scottevest Travel Vest is perhaps one of the most hyped travel vests these days, due to some terrific marketing.

    Construction

Despite criticisms of other Scottevest products on the web, after wearing my Scottevest Travel Vest for five months, the fabric, zippers, and seams still seem solid. Custom YKK main zippers are built like tanks. Smaller zippers, such as those in and on the interior pockets, look more fragile, but I've had no troubles so far. The shape and fit are great and after several long trips and almost daily wear, it maintains its shape well.

    Material

The three main materials in the construction of the Scottevest Travel vest are the exterior shell, the lining, and the clear touch pockets (a sort of plastic used in the pockets designed for touch-sensitive devices like iPhones).

    Shell

The exterior material looks great out of the box, but it faded fast after a few washes and it seems to be a dust and dirt magnet. I'm constantly brushing, sponging, or washing it, several times a week. However, it feels good, soft, and breathable, so my only criticisms are cosmetic.

    Lining

The lining is a thin, black, nylon-like material which is starting to show some strain at the stitching. The pockets are made from the same material, so I think the people who have reported tearing pockets in Scottevest products might have a valid complaint, but so far, I've developed no tears in the lining or pockets.

    Clear touch fabric

I have an iPhone, so I was eager to try the innovative clear touch fabric iPhone pockets that allow me to interact with my iPhone through the pocket.

My wife and I are world travelers and do a lot of it by walking around to tour. Sometimes I carry a daypack and sometimes I do not. We each bought a Scotte sleeveless Travel Vest for our 6 week trip through Russia and northern Europe this past summer. Here's our impressions of them:

On the plus side they have lots of useful and well thought out pockets. The vest is very practical when it's your transport day on a plane, train, bus, etc. because you are wearing everything you could possibly need. It's easy to then put the vest through an x-ray machine without having to empty out all the pockets of your other clothing. I liked the two exterior vertical zippered chest pockets on the men's vest. These are very handy to quickly put your wallet and passport in to a safe place that isn't susceptible to pickpockets. The side pockets also have magnetic closures so you can put large things in your pockets quickly and not have to worry they will fall out.

On the negative side, they are too hot to walk around in. Any day it was over 60 degrees F./ 20 C. they caused us to sweat unnecessarily even when we did not have a lot of items (like electronics) in them. Maybe they would be more breathable if the vests were made of cotton instead. We did not like the idea that we could not comfortably wear them around as we toured. The vests then just became limited transport tools, like a piece of luggage - not everyday clothing.

Other negative aspects we found included that my front zipper frequently came apart from the bottom up. It was annoying to try to close it (which was not always easy). On my wife's vest the arm openings were large enough until she put a daypack on. Then it tugged at her arms and it was uncomfortable.

I have owned one of these for a year.

It deserves A for the effort/idea, but D- for execution. The quality is simply very, very poor.

When I first picked it up, it was obvious that the fleece material was sub-par, while stitching and zippers were flimsy. Still, I liked the idea of many pockets, so I kept it. During the last year, I have worn it only a dozen or so times and tried to be very gentle. Despite the minimal wear/tear, the fleece looks pretty beat up and cannot really be worn in public anymore.

    Constructive suggestions:
    - Scottevest should focus on design and work with someone like Patagonia/Marmot on manufacturing and sourcing.
    - use the savings to buy quality zippers for the remaining pockets (YKK?).
    - upgrade the quality of the fleece used, even if you have to raise the price $50.

Bottom line, I would pay more for a high quality item, but the current version is a waste of money.
