My Favorite Bride Book,
By
This review is from: The Scottish Bride (Bride Series) (Paperback)
This is by far my favorite Bride book. I loved how Tysen and Mary Rose came together. They came together through love and respect. Tysen goes from stern to relaxed to stern then to relaxed again. It made his character believable especially all the pressures he was under. Mary Rose was so nice to read about, she wasn't a scared out of her mind person. She knew what had to be done and got it done. They came to love each other and when they married Tysen didn't have to resort to rape to have her. Bravo!!! I respect and love him for that and his moral/ethics of how to treat a person. Meggie is absolutely a kind and devout child. She wasn't smart-alecky or annoying. She truly cared for her father didn't want him hurt. Her brothers Max and Leo were awesome too. They instantly took to their new mother with little hesitation. I don't care what anyone else has said of this book, I really enjoyed it because it was a true romance. There was no show of domination from Tysen and Mary Rose was without fear of him because of it. Truly to me a great read.

Not up to Coulter Standard,

OK. So you always here that sequels are never quite as good as the originals, but Coulter has proved that theory wrong before... what happened? As the fourth book in the Bride Trilogy, I was looking forward to the usual clever dialog and catchy story line Coulter provides in most of her books. I waited and waited but it never got going. Tysen and Mary Rose are nice people but there is no story in that! Neither one is very witty, in fact, their personalities are really weak. The best parts of the book involved Tysen's three outrageous children. Most of Coulter's books I read at one time, I physically cannot put her books down once I get started. This one took me three days to read. I don't regret reading it, it was great to hear from Douglas, Alex, Ryder, Sophie, Colin, and Sinjun. I hope that readers who have never picked up a Coulter book will not choose this as their first. For those who have read her books before you are probably like me in that you can't help but read her newest release.

Delightful, fun, pure escape,

Whenever I buy something from Amazon I always check the customer reviews as I have found them very helpful. That's why I was so surprised to see some of the reviews for this book that were so negative - a waste of time, etc. What do these readers expect? This is not Pulitzer Prize winning fiction. These books are what I call "bodice busters" and they're meant to be fun. That's exactly what they are. I've read all the heavy books I want to and still do on occasion. But mostly, when I read a novel, I want to be entertained and that's exactly what Catherine Coulter does. So for my money the book was well worth it. It passed the time, kept me interested and it was total escape. Bravo Ms. Coulter, keep em coming!

Average, at best...,

I was so looking forward to reading the last in the BRIDES series, The Scottish Bride. I especially enjoyed the first and third Bride books (about Douglas and Alex & Colin and Sinjun). This book was in my opinion, just dull. It had nothing to do with his being a vicar. It was, as another reviewer put it, very difficult to "connect" to the characters Mary Rose or Tysen. I just did not come away feeling like I knew them at all, her other BRIDE books were much, much better. I read on the back cover of this book that Miss Coulter said this was her favorite book in the BRIDE series. I guess she is seeing something which I am not! I recommend the other BRIDE books by this author as well as anything by Lisa Kleypas, Julia London, Julia Quinn and Kat Martin.

I love the Sherbrookes!,
By
This review is from: The Scottish Bride (Bride Series) (Paperback)
It was great to finally read Tysen's story and to read more about the great Sherbrooke family. Tysen, despite his sexy Sherbrooke looks, is a vicar. His wife has passed away and he is raising three children. He is content with his life when he learns that he has inherited a Scottish castle and the title of Baron Barthwick. Being the responsible man that he is, he departs for Scotland not knowing that he's about to completely change his life. I thought this book was great to read. I loved seeing Tysen finally getting in touch with his Sherbrooke blood and learning to enjoy life. His daughter Meggie is magnificant. What a great addition to the story. I'd love to read a story about Meggie and the rest of the Sherbrooke children. I really enjoyed reading more about the other Sherbrooke's, Douglas and Alex, Ryder and Sophie, and Sinjun and Colin. I love the way this family gets together to solve a problem. I'd recommend this book to anyone.

A Disapointing Finale to the Bride Series,
By
This review is from: The Scottish Bride (Bride Series) (Paperback)
I want to start by confessing that I really wanted to like this book. I loved the Bride series, and I was thrilled to discover that Coulter had writtn a book about Tyson. At the same time, I had apprehensions about what type of character the sanctimonius and pious younger brother would turn out to be. My worries were not allayed by further reading, Tyson has changed since the earlier books but his character was too loosely drawn in this book. I did not find any of the other characters in this book interesting, nor was the mystery very intriguing. In summary, Coulter should have quit while she was ahead.

not worth your time!!!,
By
This review is from: The Scottish Bride (Audio Cassette)
ok...I had the occasion to listen to this novel on tape on a road trip cross-country, and I must admit this novel is the worst romance novel I have ever had the displeasure of hearing/reading. I am here to warn you fair and square that this novel is not worth either your time or money, and should be avoided at all costs...First of all...the main characters are completely unbelievable (to be expected as is romance novel) but one still expects a hint or reality... Tysen, a vicar, acts nothing like a vicar...he spends several chapters (dull chapters) claiming he never used to have a temper or get angry/violent, and yet he lets his temper flare up in every conceivable situation. His daughter Meggie, has him wrapped around her little finger, and is never once punnished for everything she does wrong (which might have been okay, but she gets on your nerves after a while, and you wonder why tysen doesnt do anything about it!)... But the main problem I had with the book, is that after about 2/3 of the book is over, Couter should have written The end and moved on to better things...the entire last 1/3 of the book is Tysen and his new Scottish Bride wandering the countryside visiting with relatives or townspeople, and beyond completely boring. NOTHING happens in those last few tapes, so if you are set on buying the novel, trust me, stop reading after they get married, or you will suffer several more hours of boredom when you could be doing something much more amusing, or at least not fall asleep at the wheel!!! If you want to read a GOOD romance writer, i suggest Karen Marie Moning, who unlike Coulter, manages to keep the reader entertained throughout the novel with the plight of the main characters, actually has a plot, and leaves the reader satisfied with the quality of her writing at the conclusion of the novel!

I read all three of the regency series and loved them when i heard about the scottish bride i was excited to go and read it. However when i started the book it wasn't exciting i kept on reading the book thinking it had to get better. The chracters never stood up for themselves and it seemed almost that they were letting things happen to them.I haven't even finished the book and am considering putting it the shelf. This is not one of the best catherine coulter's i have ever read and i love reading her books.

ONE OF COULTER'S WORST,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Scottish Bride (Bride Series) (Paperback)
This was the second Catherine Coulter I read and I nearly gave up on her. The book was poorly written compared to her usual standard and after reading a number of her other books, I began to wonder if the same person wrote Scottish Bride! I'd only recommend this book if you are stuck in a waiting room somewhere with no other reading available.

Learn to say "when"!,
By Jake (Huntersville, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Scottish Bride (Bride Series) (Paperback)
As another reviewer mentioned, this book is TOO LONG. It should have finished once Mary Rose & Tysen got married. And the "plot" involving Erickson MacPhail--a very low-rent affair. There was no real danger, and no real evil, just a bungled kidnapping by a very misguided idiot. It almost seemed as if Coulter didn't devote 100% attention to this novel-- the characters were pretty much cardboard cut-outs. I didn't get much sense of them being "real." And after a while Meggie wasn't "cute and amusing" anymore, she was just plain annoying. I haven't read any other of the Sherbrooke books, but I'm glad to hear they're better than this one. Considering Coulter's status as a writer, they'd almost have to be! |
