5.0 out of 5 stars Great Dic!!
The problem with many of the reviews here is that they expect this book to be like McB's Etymological Dictionary.

This book is 100% perfect for the learner who is just starting out. It lists the entries and their uses with the article, VERY important for people new to the language. The book is worth the price just for that.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
[....] I am currently wrapped up in the Diana Gabaldon series which is set in Scotland. I want to know how to say the Gaelic words used in the books. I majored in foreign languages and never had a dictionary that didn't include pronunciation. I returned the dictionary immediately (along with the Irish dictionary which was equally lacking).

3.0 out of 5 stars useful, April 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Scottish Gaelic English/English Scottish Gaelic Dictionary (Paperback)
If you are looking for an inexpensive gaelic-english-gaelic dictionary to use as a complement to the Teach yourself GAelic course, this is probably your best bet. A wonderful little book for beginners, though eventually you will want to get Dwelly's Gaelic-English, Thomson's English-Gaelic, and probably MacLellan's two-way as well if you continue with the language. However, these are an investment, especially if you get all three, so this one is best for starters. And because it gives the cases forms of the nouns, it will remain useful even when you are developing fluency.

2.0 out of 5 stars VERY BASIC BOOK, December 1, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Scottish Gaelic English/English Scottish Gaelic Dictionary (Paperback)
This is a very basic book written for the beginner and designed to be carried around in your "pocket". Chances are, if you know something of the Gaelic Language, you'll find many words that simply aren't listed in it. It's good as a ready reference anytime for the MOST COMMON words used, but it's far from complete.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy pocket-sized reference, August 28, 2000
This review is from: Scottish Gaelic English/English Scottish Gaelic Dictionary (Paperback)
This Scottish Gaelic-English/English-Scottish Gaelic Dictionary is a great portable reference for the Scots-Gaelic learner. It is less bulky than other, more complete, hardbound dictionaries, and contains a good selection of everyday vocabulary. I find it very easy to use and a great companion for lessons.

A must have for everyone starting this wonderful language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Positive review, December 11, 1999

The previous reviewer faults this little dictionary for not having many common words. This is true, but given the fact that the other common dictionaries are so bulky, we should not be so picky. What is more, the format of this little gem, though it be incomplete, is extremely easy to use. Entries are widely spaced from each other, and sub-entries (e.g. for prepositional pronoun conjugations, or for various idiomatic expressions using the head word) are clearly laid out and indented. That is to say, while not every word will be found, those that do appear in the dictionary are not drowned in a sea of letters. I personally find it useful and even a bit charming. A good browsing dictionary.

Not meant in any way as a comprehensive dictionary, this is a quick pocket reference. For its design, it is very good. Scots Gaelic to English/ English to Scots Gaelic that is easy to use and very handy. Nice for beginners.

This review is from: Scottish Gaelic English/English Scottish Gaelic Dictionary (Paperback)
This is an excellent way for beginners to learn gaelic. I was able to study and use some gaelic on a recent trip to Ireland and Scotland.

3.0 out of 5 stars No pronunciation guide, December 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Scottish Gaelic English/English Scottish Gaelic Dictionary (Paperback)
A bit disappointing as it doesn't have a pronunciation guide, but it's neat to see and figure out what everything is in Scots-Gaelic.
