Lowe takes us along the rugged eastern coast, from St. Andrews up to Montrose and Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen, "from heather, whin and sand, to points north," to Nairn and Dornoch. Then to the west coast, to Prestwick and Troon. It's not only the courses themselves that Lowe illuminates along the way, but the winding roads, the ancient villages, the farms and whiskey distilleries, and the people who call this land their home as well. Each step of his pilgrimage is given its due.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

More than 50 legendary courses along the coast of Scotland are captured in this visually stunning work of art by acclaimed photographer Iain MacFarlane Lowe (St. Andrews & The Open Championship). Traveling the shoreline of Scotland over a span of ten years, Lowe has captured the essence of the Scottish links, the coastal areas and the towns of this wonderful country that has adopted golf as its national sport.

Lowe takes us along the rugged eastern coast, from St. Andrews up to Montrose and Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen; “from heather, whin and sand, to points north,” to Nairn and Dornoch.  Then to the west coast, to Prestwick and Troon. It’s not only the courses themselves that Lowe illuminates along the way, but the winding roads, the ancient villages, the farms and whiskey distilleries, and the people who call this land their home as well. Each step of his pilgrimage is given its due.

Interwoven through the photography are historical notes and observations by David Joy (St. Andrews & The Open Championship). Maps and architectural drawings are also included from golf architect Kyle Phillips. The Scottish Links: A Photographer’s Journey captures the exhilarating feeling of Scotland -- from the rugged coasts and lovely villages to the classic links brimming over with elegance and complexity, to the Scottish whiskey that has sustained golfers for over 400 years. Turn its pages for the trip of a lifetime.

From the Back Cover

“From a wild, thickly whinned and duned area that protected sheep from winter’s piercing wind from the North Sea, the course emerged. Hazards like bunkers formed by cattle sheltering; walkways suggested fairways by fisherman taking their long daily walk out to The Eden Estuary to claim mussels for their baited lines—a few flattened areas where rabbits were bred—all contributed to the evolution of The Old Course.”
—from “St. Andrews and the Kingdom of Fife,” Chapter One of Scottish Golf Links: A Photographer’s Journey

5.0 out of 5 stars Fond memories, January 4, 2005
This review is from: Scottish Golf Links: A Photographer's Journey (Hardcover)
I had a chance to play several of these golf courses last year, so naturally when I saw this book I had to have it. I am very glad I bought it. The photos are spectacular and bring back lots of fond memories. I'm ready to go back. If you've ever had the chance to play golf in Scotland, buy this book. If you're planning a golf trip to Scotland, buy this book. If you love golf, buy this book. If you love beautiful photos, buy this book. In fact, I can't think of a good reason NOT to buy this book.
