Product Description

Up for sale is a Scottish Highlander sgian dubh. The sgian dubh, or lightly diphthongized, is a ceremonial knife (Gaelic sgian) worn as part of the modern Scottish Highland dress along with the kilt. It is worn tucked into the hose with only the pommel visible. The sgian dubh is normally worn on the right leg, but can also be worn on the left, depending on whether the wearer is right or left-handed. The sgian dubh may have evolved from the sgian achlais, a dagger that could be concealed under the armpit. Used by the Scots of the 17th and 18th centuries, this knife was slightly larger than the average modern sgian dubh and was carried in the upper sleeve or lining of the body of the jacket. This sgian dubh feature a Gaelic Piper on the handle, and a plastic made yellow jewel at the end of the handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little sgian dubh, June 1, 2010

This review is from: 7" Scottish Highlander Celtic Sgian Dubh Knife with Case (Misc.)
I'm very happy with this knife. I've seen what seems to be the exact same knife at kilt suppliers for nearly 4x the price. The brass work is very detailed. The handle is plastic, but seems to be tough plastic. I've had other Sgian Dubhs that had metal handles and were too heavy. This fits nicely in the top of a sock without making it sag (2.8 oz). The Blade says 440 stainless and made in China. It is mirror shiny and came partially sharpened. It's easy to put a better edge on it if you want more utility out of it. It is very nicely ground. The sheath fits quite snugly and doesn't fall off. The color seems a bit brownish to me, which goes with my other stuff.

1.0 out of 5 stars not worth keeping; not worth returning, July 14, 2011

First the good news--the seller[3Q Net Inc for Amazon] was fine--item shipped as promised; packaged well; no damage; etc. Now for the bad news. The item was poorly made. the 7" Scottish Highlander Celtic Sgian Dubh Knife is supposed to have an antique brass looking finish on the emblems on the knife handle and sheath. rather than the antique brass look as in the pickture they are mostly blackened--I assume either not applied; poorly applied or just rubs off. One rim is mixed colour--half antique brass look and half black. Even for an inexpensive item--that is poor quality. the shipping costs to and from are more than the item is worth so I won't be returning it. but i won't be buying another item from this manufacturer--i think they would do well to change suppliers and go for a better and higher priced product.7" Scottish Highlander Celtic Sgian Dubh Knife with Case
