Highlanders of Scotland yesterday, today and the future.,
By Shawn Marchinek "McDonald" (Washington State, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scottish Highlanders: A People and Their Place (Hardcover)
Scottish Highlanders by James Hunter is a wonderful book. It helps to show the highlanders of today and explain the chapter of their history AFTER the clearances. I have been a fan of Mr. Hunter's books after reading Glencoe and the Indians, which explains the similarities of the British Governments persecution of the Highlanders in Glencoe and the US Government, and the Nez Perce Indians.
In this book, James Hunter travels around the Highlands and the Hebrides visiting current day residence and Crofts and the families who live there today. He explains some of the forestry and land management practices that have been introduced to help preserve the Highlands and even repair some of the damages of the clearances. Along the way, he explains the historical points of the areas and in the end helps retells the history of the Highlands back to the days of Dalriada and Columba. This book, through history and examples of today's highlanders, helps to explain the spirit that lives on in millions of people throughout the world who have ancestors from these seemingly mystical islands and lands in Scotland. I recommend this book for anyone of Scottish decent who feels that draw and fascination to the Highlands. Mr. Hunter has captured the spirit and his words fuel the fire. |
