5.0 out of 5 stars Best in the Deep South
Just as with Kentucky bluegrass, zoysia, and fescue, there are a number of different cultivars (types) of bermudagrass. The one in this product is called "Sunbird." Sunbird is a good cultivar, with excellent green color and disease resistance, but it's not one of the more winter-hearty types. If you live north of South Carolina it's going to be brown about 9 months a year...

I read through some of the reviews prior to buying this product. A few stated "the grass didn't sprout." I figured that these people didn't know what they were doing, so I went and purchased this product anyways. Now, 20 days after I planted the seed, it has not sprouted. If you live north of South Carolina it's going to be brown about 9 months a year and could have a little trouble surviving the winter. For bermudagrass that is going to be planted in the northern part of the warm season grass zone, you would be better off using one of the more northern-adapted cultivars like Yukon. At the time of this writing, I did not see Yukon being offered on Amazon, but it does show up from time to time, and it should be available at your local hardware store/seed supplier if you live in one of the more northern parts of the warm season grass zone. It should work a little better for you.

I read through some of the reviews prior to buying this product. A few stated "the grass didn't sprout." I figured that these people didn't know what they were doing, so I went and purchased this product anyways. Now, 20 days after I planted the seed, it has not sprouted. I have planted many types of grass seed, and have grown Bermuda grass before. If I buy grass seed, I want it to sprout. Additionally, this product is supposed to have a protective covering that is supposed to ensure sprouting. Finally, due to this protective covering, the bag of seed is only half seed - the rest of the weight is the protective coating. I am going to try to contact someone to see if I can get a refund or exchange. I am quite disappointed in the time, water, and effort I have wasted in trying to grow this grass.

I like in DFW are and spread the seed 2 weeks back. I have the same result as the other reviewer. Not a single seed has sprouted even though I have been watering my lawn 3 times a day.

If you aren't planning to "skip a watering" you should be aware that there's only ~ 40% viable seed in this package.

The product is 50% "water-absorbing non-seed material"; and the seed had an 85% germination.

And I haven't even put it down yet.

This product does not work; do not waste your money and time. I bought one bag, prepared the yard (spent around two hours doing this), and applied the product. I did it in the month of March, rain was frequent and still no seed germinated. I contacted Amazon and informed about the situation. Amazon has great customer service, they gave me a full refund.

I rec'd this without checking it out locally and reading the label.

Had I did, I would NOT HAVE B OUGHT IT!! It has only 50% (that's HALF)seed. The rest is a coating on the seed. When you buy five pounds and pay for ten pounds, you get only 2-1/2 pounds. NOT A GOOD DEAL.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Uses, March 19, 2011
This review is from: Scotts 18253 Turf Builder Bermuda Grass Seed 5-Pound Bag (Lawn & Patio)
I have used this product before and have never had anything less then 70% germination rate per 1000 ft2. After reading the reviews by others i find this uneasy because I have used the product as a landscaper and heat to see bad results as service is my main goal. I am not sure how the people who had bad results applied their seed but you have to take a certain approach when using Bermuda seed because it is smaller then fescue seed. You either have to spread it by hand or mix it in with sand otherwise it will fly away and end up four yards down, no joke. You also need to put down starter fert. with about 1.5 lbs of nitrogen per 1000ft2. You also need to cover the seed with some soil not very deep just lightly rake it in with a metal rake and then water by hand or irrigation just until the water starts to pool but not much more beyond that. Then keep it moist till it germinates and this may take 14 to 21 days it depends on weather it is hulled unhulled and watering and what not. The hulled seeds germinates faster then the unhulled. Once you see grass start watering ever other day until it reaches the height you want it pulse 1/3 then only mow off the top 1/3 and no more. Once it becomes established you only need to water 1 inch a week which is about 620 gal ever 1000ft2. you may want to break it up in to two water sessions in order to help it soak in and not run off. Be careful not to water too much because that will kill it just as fast as no water. It is really just science and luck. Scott's is a good product for a residential product.

This review is from: Scotts 18253 Turf Builder Bermuda Grass Seed 5-Pound Bag (Lawn & Patio)
We used this seed on our front and backyards 2 Sundays ago and have yet to see a single sprout. We've been watering in the evenings and if I walk to lawn I can still see seeds not doing anything. When we planted the Rye seed in the winter, we could see green in 7 days.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money, August 25, 2011
This review is from: Scotts 18253 Turf Builder Bermuda Grass Seed 5-Pound Bag (Lawn & Patio)
I have a 300sq ft lawn, and added double the seed, along with Scotts half maneur topper. It's been three weeks, and a $400 water bill, and I've got nothing to show for it except for patches of the gras in my back yard. If you're still planning on bying this, save yourself a trip to the store, and burn your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Somebody who knows how to plant grass, July 15, 2011
This review is from: Scotts 18253 Turf Builder Bermuda Grass Seed 5-Pound Bag (Lawn & Patio)
I bought a bag of this seed a month ago to fix up my parent's front yard. After reading

through all these other reviews I question whether they really know how to plant grass

seed. It sounds as if they are spreading the grass seed on the soil, but then not covering it

back over with more soil, which exposes the seed directly to the sun, dries it, and kills it. As for my

experience, I did cover the seeds back over with soil, and went to a manual system of watering the

grass two times a day, once in the morning and once in the evening at fifteen minutes each. After a

week it was already sprouting, and after two it was an inch in height. A month later now, I have been able to

switch to once every other day because the grass is 4-5 inches in height, and this is using .98 cent steer manure. The only problem I have is that in some areas there are patches where the seed didn't grow. However, I take that as my mistake for not tilling enough soil in the area, and for bad sprinkler coverage. The color of the grass is a bright green, almost glowing, and the texture is really soft and light, and is a much better upgrade over St. Augustine.
