Scotts- Recommended Feeding Routine: Early Spring

An early spring feeding helps grass green-up after winter. You should feed around the first time you mow your grass.

BENEFITS OF MULTIPLE FEEDINGS

Regular feedings provide the nutrients your lawn needs to look its best and withstand the stresses of weeds, heat, drought and family activity.

Make lawn care simple by following these 4 Easy Steps:

1. Feed Regularly

Feeding your lawn twice in the spring and twice in the fall helps strengthen it to crowd out weeds and protect against heat and drought. There are Nitrogen-rich lawn foods that can be applied to any grass type and many products are kid and pet friendly when used as directed. If you want to kill dandelions and other major lawn weeds* while you feed, you can apply Weed & Feed products. *See label for listed weeds.

2. Mow High and Return Clippings

Mowing at a higher height allows the grass to grow in thick and develop a strong, deep root system. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn helps to recycle plant nutrients back into the soil.

3. Water Your Lawn

Well-fed lawns use water more efficiently than their unfed counterparts but you still need to water your lawn! When grass needs water, it will let you know by wilting or dulling in color. Try to take advantage of nature’s sprinkler instead of your own as often as possible and rely on the rain to water your lawn.

4. Repair Bare Spots

Reseeding bare areas in your lawn helps keep it thick and prevents weeds from taking hold. There are number of combination grass seed products available that are great for different kinds of lawns. Try Scotts EZ Seed products!

I wanted to love this .. I used this and Scotts Fertilizer w/ Weed Control ... Scotts fertilizers (and most others) recommend you do this when the lawn is damp from dew or sprinklers so i did what they said but when i was done i noticed the inside of the plastic wheels were full of wet melted fertilizer (you can see on the picture the wheels are shaped like a pie plate) .. and i also noticed spots on the lawn where it dropped some of the inner wheel residue and burnt the lawn ...

The Spreader action is great and the Edge guard works perfect but the fact the wheels trap fertilizer is a bummer .. i will Keep this unit and keep using it but be warned

Thanks

I've had this for over a year now and have used it many times. This is the first spreader I have used, so I can't compare it to others, but I do know that it works well for me. It does a good job, and keeps working without having to fiddle with it all the time. All I do is clean it out, and it is ready to go the next time. One downside is that Scott's doesn't tell you how to translate the settings into lb's / sq ft, so if the product you want to put down doesn't list this spreader and it's settings, you'll have to do some calculations or endless searching. I would recommend this to others, as the price to value ratio seems to be good for a beginner. I don't plan to replace this until it dies, which so far looks like it could be quite a ways down the road.

I found this item to be prefect. For those who complained about the product collecting inside the wheel and then dropping off creating burn spots, a very easy fix is available. Sure, it would be nice if the manufacturer made a solid wheel, but that would increase cost of production (more plastic) and shipping (more weight). To fix the issue, take the left wheel off (depress the two little buttons and slide the wheel off the axle), then press an 8" aluminum pie plate against the hub to make in imprint. Cut out the hole, slide the pie plate (curved AWAY from the wheel) and wheel back on the axle. Then use a mallet to gently pound the pie-plate flat enough so that it clears the bearing, and you have created a cover for the inside of the wheel. I just used mine on grass I had thoroughly wet down, and had no problem at all with fertilizer clumping inside the left wheel. I am a 76-year-old female. ;-D HTH.

Built on the cheap for sure. The spinning thrower is an inch to low and the material you spread will fill the wheel wells and dump out in piles onto your lawn. The spreader has an edge guard - great- but you could also say that the wheels work as edge guards too. Don't bother buying this - you'll be disappointed. Unfortunately Scotts seems to have a monopoly in broadcast spreaders. Maybe thats why they didn't catch this obvious flaw in design or maybe they just don't care.

I bought this spreader last year when my 20+ year old Scotts broadcast spreader bit the dust. It appeared to be substandard when I bought it but I decided to give it a try in that easy buying options locally are few and far between. Big mistake! Today I gave it it's first real test, using it on my approximately 3/4 acres of property. The drive wheel consistently stuck and refused to turn at pace, the control for fertilizer release sometimes shut off when the lever was released and sometimes it didn't. Towards the end of my efforts, the wheels jammed and a plastic-on-plastic clicking serenade accompanied my efforts to finish the job. Alas, I had to abandon my efforts because I just couldn't get the spreader to work. If this is the best Scotts can do, perhaps it's time for them to stop marketing lawn spreaders. Quality seems, sadly, to be a thing of the past when it comes to Scotts lawn tools. Another grating issue is that on many Scott's lawn products, such as the Grub-X I bought today, they only list Scotts spreader settings regarding the product application. If Scotts made a decent spreader, I would buy it but in the interim, they should list the spreader setting for other brands of spreaders. I have 3 college degrees and a rather expansive vocabulary but the most accurate way that I can describe this product is as follows: Don't buy it because it is truly a piece of crap!

By the way, a thankful nod goes to Home Depot, who took the spreader back and issued me a store credit today despite the fact that I bought the spreader there last year. They are truly a class act and I thoroughly appreciate their efforts on my behalf. Now the burning question is, who makes a decent spreader that actually has their spreader settings listed on lawn care products?

Good for a few uses, but the plastic gearing breaks. The plastic wheels slip often. Don't waste your money. In my opinion, it's better to pay $100 for a good spreader that will last than to buy several of these over the course of a few years.

I have purchased two of these in the last two years. Bothe broke after two or three uses. At least for me, the gear connection between the wheel and the spreader does not stay intact. On the first one, the arm inside the hopper stopped turning, the wheel itself froze. On the second one, the unit simply fell apart during use.
