Good shipping, not do good description,

This review is from: Scott's Fingerprint Mechanics (Hardcover)
The book was delivered on time with no problems. It did take closer to 14 to get but, it still made it before classes started. My only complaint was the description. The book was listed as good condition but the description left much to be desired. The pages weren't marked on and the hardback cover was in good shape. However, the description didn't state that the binding of the book was shot. The pages fall out on their own which is a major pain in the butt! The book is a little out dated as well. It was published in 1978. Some methods are a little outdated but, it's what the school requires.

This book is a classic and I found it to be very informative. A significant portion of the data is obsolete and therefore should be taken in that perspective. If you work in this field you will find this book of worth. It also offers a perspective into the pioneering attitude of CSIs and latent print examiners from 'back in the day'. If you have read the FBI science of fingerprints and survived, you will love this textbook. Untill 2005 this was required reading for the IAIs Crime Scene Analyst certification exam. I assume they pulled it in favor of more up to date material.

In 1978 it would be 5 stars for sure!,
This review is from: Scotts Fingerprint Mechanics (Paperback)
This book is an awesome text for anyone who conducts crime scene investigation. The reason for the 3 star rating is the sad truth that this book is simply out-dated. Originally written in 1978 it was ahead of its time. Unfortunately it has not kept up with the advances in technology. The book is full of references to film and and cameras that are no longer available as well as suppliers that no longer exist. The book is written from a practical use viewpoint that is rare under any circumstances. I read this book as a requirement for the International Association for Identification Crime Scene Analyst certification exam and enjoyed it very much. Anyone who investigates crime scenes or conducts processing or comparisons will find this book of value. The book is comprehensive in that it discusses comparison, lifting prints, taking inked prints, fingerprint kits and equipment, chemical processes and case studies. The IAI has phased this book from its required list due in part, most likely to the fact that there is simply too much information that is out of date. Some things are still right on though. Fingerprints are unique and persistent! If you are interested in the science of fingerprints this one should be in your library.
