The Compleat Aural Spectrum through a Prism of Expression,
By BOB VANARSDALE (Denver, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scott's Red Star (Audio CD)
Stunning, varied, insightful, refreshing ... Just cold adjectives that can't begin to describe the heart, soul, and drop-yer-jaw musicianship that just pours from this first-time collaboration between brothers Peter and Patrick Noonan. Each an accomplished composer and recording artist -- Peter at piano and Patrick on guitars -- their conjoined talents are ably abetted by yet-another-Noonan Chris on drums, long-time friends and musical associates Paul Lieberman on flutes, piccolo and tenor sax, Scott Lee on acoustic bass, and the consummate violinist Jonathan Levi whose bow-play would just flat-out steal the show from any other group of less-able musicians. From playful to bittersweet, from Spanish guitar to Gershwin, with a breath of calypso, just a hint of Charlie Daniels, a nod to Mongo Santamaria and a wink to ragtime, this disc continues to delight, surprise, inspire, and just plain move me after holding the top spot on my living room playlist for almost a year now. It should appeal to anyone possessed of a taste for jazz, an ear for composition, a sense for style and technique, an appreciation for excellence in the art of engineering music, and the peculiarly-human need for emotional engagement with the aural cosmos.
