The name, "Scotts Heat Tolerant Bluegrass Seed," is a bit confusing/misleading. It has less than 10% bluegrass by weight, and is mostly Tall Fescue. Yet, it's pitched primarily as a new type of bluegrass that has all the advantages of tall fescue in terms of heat and drought resistance, but with the dark color and rhizomes that makes Kentucky bluegrass the ultimate in premium grass seeds. So, based on the name, you might think it's mostly heat tolerant bluegrass, which it is not. Tall Fescue is a good grass seed, but the blades are not as nice as Kentucky blue grass, and it doesn't grow all that well in clay soil, which many people have. So, if you want a Kentucky bluegrass lawn, you might want to buy a product that is all or mostly KBG and not this. However, this is good seed for many lawns in the so-called transition zone, as long as you are aware it is not going to be a pure stand of KBG, heat tolerant or otherwise.

One of the great mysteries of my decadent, privileged life is how grass seed can sprout and thrive in the cracks of my driveway, yet be so difficult to germinate in my lawn. I mean really, grass is basically a weed. It grows without human intervention in the gravel by the side of the road for crying out loud! Yet it requires daily coddling and tending to get it to come up in my lawn.

This seed by Scotts boasts Water Smart technology intended to improve your chances of success. As with anything however, your level of success will bear direct correlation to your level of effort. If you prepare your lawn area with fresh topsoil, top dress it with peat moss, saturate it well, spread out the seed, rake it into the peat moss layer and water it twice a day until the seeds sprout- you will have good results. If you think you can just fling some seed onto the bare spots of your lawn and count on the spring rains to keep them watered, you are destined for failure. You might as well sprinkle out shredded dollar bills and expect money trees to grow.

Bottom line, the Water Smart coating will give you a better chance at a good outcome but don't let it give you a false sense of security and think you can neglect the project. Follow the directions to the letter and you will soon have a lush lawn that will be the envy of your neighbors. Then you can spend the rest of the summer fertilizing, raking out moss, thatching, mowing, edging, spraying for weeds and insects............

I live in Middle Tennessee where every summer, you can expect mid 90s for highs and sometimes it crosses the threshold of 100+ degree temps. This year, I don't think it's gone past ~ 95 degrees but luckily for me, it's been raining quite frequently this 2013 year.

My yard is mostly bermuda grass which I hate, but there are some areas of fescue. About a month ago, I recently had a contractor renovate my entire backyard and with that, came several thousand square feet of nice fescue sod. However, I ended up not buying enough fescue sod patches to cover the areas where he leveled with good topsoil, so I resorted to doing the rest myself because after all, if I have to water my sod twice a day, I might as well plant grass seed in areas that need it while I'm watering my entire lawn.

In the past, I've used both Scotts & Pennington fescue brands of seed but have always opted for the "non water retention coated" kind. I did by the Scott's EZ Seed once and it worked well, but the price point for EZ Seed is way more than I'm willing to spend. Regardless of all the seeds I've purchased, I've had much better success rate with Scotts despite the premium pricing over Pennington. But because I needed to fill in the areas of bare topsoil very quickly, I opted for this brand of grass at my local Lowe's specifically because it advertised the "water smart plus" coating. I figured if I needed grass to grow NOW, I would go ahead and pay a premium price.

The results are amazing. In about 5 days of watering twice a day, the grass seed has already started germinating and I had thousands of little blades of grass. Fast forward to two weeks later, this seed is already almost 2 inches high and looking from my window, is a nice vibrant green and you can barely see the topsoil from afar.

Germination time seems to be adequate. However, the main downside is that there is not much bluegrass seed in this mix, it's mostly tall fescue. I also noticed a considerable amount of weeds popping up. Although some weed is expected in mixes, it appears to have more than "usual".

With one exception, I chose to not repeat the information provided by amazon.com for this product because it is clear, concise and helpful; however, like me, for those of you that have little patience for waiting on greener pastures to develop prepare yourself for the long haul.

The instructions for this seed state that it can take up to 4 to 6 weeks for it to grown. We have had a bit cooler than normal and less rain than one would expect for this time of the year in Springfield, Illinois; however, after 30 days of tender loving care, this grass is growing nicely in areas where I have not had a great deal of success over the years with other products.

It doesn’t keep the rabbits from nibbling at it or the squirrels from digging in it, but I am very happy with the progress so far and think you will be too.
