This review is from: Scotty Anchor Pack with 1.5 Pound Anchor Line in Watertight Jar (Sports)
Got this for my Kayak looking for an small yet effective anchor , and was right only on the small ; the jar is nine inches tall and the anchor looks tiny , wasn't discouraged at first since even huge ships have relatively small anchors , so got to do the rigging and noticed that in the end where the flukes are there is supposed to be a hole to attach the recovery line if the anchor fouls up , there was none , so I drilled one myself to be prepared in case the anchor got stuck , this was wasted effort since the anchor never caught bottom .
After the first unsuccessful try did some research and added three feet of galvanized chain between the anchor and the line to help setting the anchor , tried again and nothing , I was freely drifting down current ! recover the anchor and noticed two flukes where laying flat , the ring that secured them had slipped back so wrapped a mini bungee cord to secure the ring , onto try number three ... After even more research learned the the best line-depth ratio is 10-1 with 7-1 being good and 5-1 the minimum acceptable decided to give this anchor the best chance possible , chose a spot about 5-6 feet deep , got in position and let go all the 50 feet of line drift , drift , drift , HOLD ! for a second ... then drift again . Extensive research told me that the fluke type anchor is ill suited for sandy/muddy bottoms , it works good on rocky ones and is best for bottoms with heavy vegetation undergrowth , the river I use is sandy/muddy bottom so onto search for a plow type anchor ... Should have done all that research before buying anything .
