3.0 out of 5 stars not what the box picture showed!
The flush mount bracket sent is one of many options for the holder. The problem is that the picture showed on the box is the one I wanted, but, the manufacturer, not Amazon sent a different mount. The box it came in shows the one I wanted ??? They are both called flush mounts, a bit confusing. Beware of what you want. The company has supplied limited info to Amazon . You...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Rod Holder, January 23, 2010
This review is from: Scotty Baitcaster/ Spinning Rod Holder Black with 244 Flush Deck Mount (Sports)
This holder works great for me. It holds my fishing rod very securely. I use this holder for fishing from my kayak. I can keep my hands on the paddle and reach the rod quickly and easily with this holder.

This holder has a rubber strap to lock in your rod if you want. I personally don't use that feature much since the holder does a very good job of securing the rod with gravity alone. Also, by not using the strap, I can take the rod out quickly if a fish hits the line.

I looked at other holders, and while some were less expensive, they all seemed inferior to this one.

I got a different base (the #241 Mount, see link at bottom of this review) later to avoid the obvious large hole I would have to drill (not just for the screws but the shaft also).

The left-right rotating neck feature is nice to position the holder just how you want it. I don't change it much once I get it set, but it's invaluable to get it into the right initial position. It stays put by friction alone, but it is very secure.

The twist for up-down, locks very securely with a thumb wheel. Again, I don't change it much once I get it set, but it's invaluable.

Regarding my setup, I didn't want to drill holes in my kayak, so I rigged up a system. I loaded a picture of my system to the "customer images". It's the yellow kayak. This system is basically the holder mounted to a board and then bungee strapped to my kayak. The bungee straps were the default straps already on my kayak. The board I chose was a "plastic" board for outdoor decking applications sold at my local home store. It was strong and waterproof.

While this setup enables flexibility of positioning and no holes, it is slightly less solid than drilling into the 'yak. If you're catching huge lunkers that strike super hard maybe this bungee setup won't work for you. I have caught some pretty big fish that have hit hard though, so maybe getting carried away isn't needed. For me this bungee setup worked well because I was fishing casually and I could move or eliminate it entirely. For example, a day without fishing or when the kayak is on the car racks.

I would definitely buy this holder again, it has worked really well for me.

I purchased this rod holder for use in a sit in kayak and mounted it in a flush holder just forward of the cockpit. Its a very well made product and serves it purpose very well. I did have to purchase a mini rod holder extension in order to have enough clearance for the butt of my rod when the rod holder is turned parallel to the yak.

Rigged my Kayak with this mount and Rod Holder to serve dual purpose for Spinning, casting and if possible, Fly Rod holder. It is well made, convenient to operate and sturdy. Good Products Scotty put forth.

I use a fishing model kayak which has two flush mounted rod holders behind the cockpit. They are hard to reach so i bought one of these Scotty rod holders and installed it on the front of my cockpit. This thing is worth gold!I really couldnt fish without it! The best part is that it is removable from its mount when i am finished fishing and has a cap to keep water out of the opening where you "install " it .It easily holds any of my spinning rods and is invaluable when moving from one fishing area to another. You just put your rod in it and paddle on! Finally, the quality of this product is very high.
I am thinking about installing a second one on the other side of the front of my yak so I can more easily carry and use two rods when fishing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, October 22, 2011
This review is from: Scotty Baitcaster/ Spinning Rod Holder Black with 244 Flush Deck Mount (Sports)
Easy to install but make sure you set the bracket according to where you want your rod to extend. The flat mount bracket does not allow the rod to pivot. Once the rod holder is set in the flush bracket it's set in that position. For a kayak you will need the extender to elevate the rod away from feet etc. Trust me on this since just mounted on my Native kayak center riser.

Fast Shipping. Super product. Easy to install- needed hole drill, but expected it. Didn't know I'd need moounting hardware- must've missed that. Slight inconvenience, but no big deal. Turned my Dirigo 120 into a fishing kayak, Sweet!

I first bought one of these to use on a kayak and now have several of the flush mounts on my Nitro fish/ski boat. I put several of the flush mounts on the front of the boat where I do most of my fishing, mount the gear head extenders in the mounts and then these rod holders on top. Love the adjustable mount and it brings the rod holder up to a convenient height whether I am sitting or standing, and having several of them keeps several rods accessible. The strap is great for securing the rods when moving, hold rods securely even when moving fast on rough water. I typically leave the rods mounted and pointed horizontally and backward while towing the boat home. Plan to mount a couple of the triple rod holders on the back of the boat as well.

I bought this for my kayak, and its great, it does just what I wanted. Delivery was a bit costly to New Zealand, but still worked out cheaper than buying it here, and took less than a week to arrive. Would definately recomend. :-)

I installed this holder on my kayak. It is a very solid unit. My only complaint is that I did not know that I had to put such a large hole in the boat. But that is minor and the base looks like it came with the boat.
