This book with the original illustrations, including all the ads that were at the back of the book, can be downloaded as an ebook for free from Project Gutenberg.

I was very disappointed with this volume and I haven't yet decided to return it. For some reason, all the original diagrams and illustrations have been removed from the reprint -- even where they are referenced in the text.

There is no TOC or index and or any use of bold or highlighted typefaces to even determine the beginning or end of a topic.

The volume is poorly laid-out. For example, a 43-page listing of suggested materials at the end lists Title, Author and Publisher with no line breaks between the references.

In fact, there isn't a line break or paragraph heading in the entire volume. It looks very much like a computer printout from the pre-desktop publishing era, before WYSIWYG typography.

Please note, the original volume was NOT formatted this way, this was a very cheap reproduction of the original, unskillfully assembled with no effort at all going into the publishing process. This makes it useless as a reference book.

This book is a time capsule from the beginning of the Boy Scouts in the United States. Ecology? The Boy Scouts were there in 1911. Animal rights? Ditto. Of course, the specifics in this century-old text may not match current viewpoints, but the Boy Scouts were global before Globalism became chic! I showed the ads to really old boy scouts-those who were boy scouts during the 1950's-and they were reminded of the changes.

Don't use this book as a "how to" reference without first checking carefully. The advice on first aid includes procedures known to aggravate injuries-such as rubbing snow on frostbitten areas (page 272.) The section on constructing radio communications equipment (page 210) was written prior to the establishment of the Federal Communications Commission-in addition to needing licenses to build and operate the equipment, professional Morse Code operators are rare in the United States.

Some of this book is still current, too. Page 14 starts with the Scout Oath and the explanation of the Scout Law. The section on tracking is still good.

Get a copy! It's an inexpensive artifact from the end of America's frontier days.

Anyone that spends any time in the great outdoors owes it to themselves to get this book.
It's jam-packed with timeless tips to make even a greenhorn look like a seasoned old pro.
Plus...it's a doorway back to a kinder time that bears remembering.

This book is rated for readers from ages 9 to 12. It deserves reading for readers up to and over age 100. More than just a book on the outdoors a good book for how to live life.

I purchased this book on accident alongside another reprint of the same 1911 manual, and had I purchased it alone, I probably would have looked upon it more favorably.

Unfavorable Points:

The cover is cheesy, and was part of the reason I thought it was the *current* manual (my fault), while the *other* one I got had a more nostalgic cover that was more representative of the contents.

The Images looked like poorly photocopied versions of the original, and they looked too much like a cheap attempt at piecing together the book in a layout program (where the other book actually professionally matched the image grays and whites to the rest of the text, making it look more like a real reprint).

The book was also much more pricier than the *nicer* version. Had it been less expensive than its better-made counterpart, I probably would not have been as disappointed.

Favorable Points:

There are more (original) ads in the back of this one than the other version I purchased, so that was nice ... and it DOES include all the pages from the original manual.

Overall:

I really hate to provide an unfavorable review, but this version of the reproduction is poorly made, has an uglier cover and costs more than the other reproduction of the manual. It doesn't take a whole lot of talent to print copies of public domain or historical material (so I'm not attacking the publisher's writing or artistic abilities), but this reproduction certainly could have been done much better, as its big-publisher competition shows.

It's nice to be able to purchase a copy of the original Boy Scout Handbook.
It's of great value to see where the scouting movement began ... where it's roots are. It's also amusing to see how medical information has changed in the last 90+ years.
It's a great resource for many things that are not in the current Boy Scout Handbook. A great reference book!

I expected something that looked like the original Handbook. This document contains the text only, without and photos or drawing. If I had known what it really is, I never would have bought it.
