Upwords is a great game for the whole family.
Dan Hassett
Been looking for this game, bought a older one at a yard sale, but this is the newer one and I love it.

It's a different way of thinking about the "word" games but it's great!

Played this at a friend's house recently and decided to buy one for our family, Be warned: the board and tiles have been scaled down (no doubt to save money) from earlier versions. So the tiles are pretty small for adult hands. Even worse (to me) is that the board is now a garish green (brighter and more garish than the Amazon photo suggests) -- it is so gross. This is probably the manufacturer's attempt to compete with all the bright colors of video games. They really blew it. Better for a board game to offer something that most video games can't: the opportunity for a tactile experience, some eye contact and some quality family time. Instead, you get this overpriced piece of plastic (cheap bright green board and 100 small letter tiles). I'd return it if I could, and look on eBay for an older version.

I am an elementary school teacher and a child's vocabulary level has a high correlation to their reading comprehension. In a time of dropping vocabulary levels, this is a quick and easy game that has students checking the dictionary and expanding their vocabulary in a fun way. (I allow them to use the dictionary to check words or "find" words as they play.) I also "allow" them to expand to Scrabble and Upwords when they want more challenge. Students who never opted to play vocabulary games are now playing both of these.

I bought one game initially and just bought more so the whole class can play at one time. This is one way to expand their knowledge that they think is a reward.

I LOVE this game! The stacking of letters on top of one another (up to five high) keeps the whole board fresh, and strategically vulnerable to change. Tiles are scored depending upon their height, so scoring increases as the game progresses. The play tension builds. I find that way more engaging than simply putting tiles flat on a gameboard, cementing that section of the board for the whole rest of the session. Upwords keeps you thinking and scanning the entire board throughout the entire game.

UPDATED 2013: The new iOS app that came out early 2013 is also a great way to play. I like both versions - there's something wonderfully tactile and face-to-face about the plastic version (and you can play up to four players). The new app version has soon great features that can only be provided in an electronic version (like instant word approval or rejection via an online dictionary, AND you can find folks online for competition - both invited friends, or random other players. Nice combo of products. Finally.

I love playing Scrabble Upwords online, so when I went to buy this as a Christmas present for someone else, I couldn't wait for them to open it so I could play it. The game does not disappoint from the online version. The only I would change (as has been mentioned in other reviews) is that the game pieces sit very loosely on the board. So if you're playing on the floor, or with someone fidgety, there's a good chance you'll be trying to replace tiles when they get knocked off.

Overall, this game is a good one to add to your collection. It's fun, challenging, and there's nothing like the feeling of scoring big on someone else's word!

My husband, 12-year-old daughter and I picked up this game while on vacation recently. It really passed the time during a rain-in, stuck in the hotel. We were all challenged by the game, but it was not impossible at all. After the first game, we were all coming up with much bigger and better words.

Overall, it's a good concept and a very cool game. Like scrabble, but more fun!

Friends introduced this "toy" or word game one weekend. It took a few minutes to master, occasionally substituting Srabble's rules then correcting myself. Ever since we've played Upwards instead of Scrabble -- it's faster and more portable -- great fun for wordsmiths. A challenge to build up; perhaps add a prefix or suffix -- easy to score. Enjoy!

We love to use the upwords tiles to play not only the classic game, but also the word tiles lend themselves to practicing letter patterns and "word families". Such as just starting with a word like "bit" and doing everything you can think of to change it into: sit, kit ,lit, knit, fit, quit, quite, etc. Really great for lots of fun and sometimes silly practice! How about using the tiles to see how many smaller words you can make out of a phrase, your name, a title or anything else! How many words can you make out of Paul Bunyan? You can probably think of other ideas, but the stacking tiles really help to make these games smooth and less frustrating.

A really fun game helping kids learn to spell, and it is easy to build words off the tiles as they go up.
