3.0 out of 5 stars Great in principle but poor in quality and usability
My wife and I love playing Scrabble at home . Since we take trips to overseas spending 10,15,20 hours traveling in planes, I thought it would be great.

But the quality for practical use is poor, as it is flimsy. It can be improved considerably by making it strong and actually using the prototypes in beta tests and making it sturdy and strong.

I love to be able to travel with Scrabble, especially when the game is small enough to pack in an overnight bag. As soon as I opened the game to pack it for my long trip, however, I was disappointed to find the latch that closes the board didn't work; I had to use a rubberband to secure it. In addition, the paper backing warped easily. Having purchased the game in another state, I couldn't return or exchange it. The game's durability is very below par for its price, and doesn't qualify as "deluxe." Bottom line: Travel Scrabble Deluxe is a great concept in a convenient size, but poorly executed and overpriced.

For those who expect a durable and quality-made toy, don't buy this one. This scrabble game comes packaged in a cheap, hard plastic that will crack if banged or dropped. One cannot pack up the game and expect to continue it at another time. The scrabble board is placed inside a plastic holder to prevent tiles from slipping but with tiles in place, one cannot close the case.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great edition of Scrabble!, July 2, 1999

I definitely prefer this edition of Scrabble over the standard flat board or the full-sized deluxe. This travel-size deluxe is not compact, but it's small enough to be portable. It's no problem to take it with you over to a friend's house or on a car trip.

The plastic clamshell case is quite durable. It opens like a book, and the board on the inside has the grid with raised ridges so that the tiles will stay in place. There's no rotating base, but it's easy enough to turn the board as you play.

Travel scrabble has traveled the world with me.It is great on the plane or at the beach. As a designer, myself,I have two suggestions for Hasbro:replace the paper board with plastic because the paper warps in humid conditions like the beach, and find a way to fit a small scrabble dictionary into the case.I have to carry a paperback separately and find it cumbersome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Durable or not?, January 17, 2003

Since durability and tile locking sound so important to reviewers, let me say that I have purchased two Travel Scrabble sets. I don't have this version, but I have used it several times.

The two sets I've purchased were an older style that used tape as a binding and not interlocking plastic, and let me tell you: both previous bindings are worthless. The plastic is much better.

Also, the plastic is plenty durable as long as you're careful and don't get into situations where you could drop it; the plastic works fine. The tiles also don't come out of the grid that easily, but remember: if you make them stay too well, it's a pain to get them out again...

While I haven't bought it yet (but will soon), the tiles DO lock in place and games CAN be saved. The cushioning around it should also help with durability. Hope this helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED, September 4, 2000

The Travel Scrabble is shoddily made and was a big disappointment to me. For over 30 years I owned a wonderful, compact, magnetized Travel Scrabble which was so worn that I finally bought this new one. Here are the problems: 1. Too big and bulky for easy packing in a suitcase. 2. Poor plastic box is likely to break in the pressure of a suitcase. 3. The board, if you can call it that, is a plastic cover with a cardboard underpiece which falls out of place all the time confusing the players. I finally had to find a way to glue it to the plastic cover. 4. The letter squares are poorly finished and do not sit well in the trays.

All together, I do not feel that I received my money's worth for this purchase and I am sorry to see that Milton Bradley has allowed such poor quality product to be produced under their name.

Despite the fact that I love to play Scrabble, there is little joy or comfort in travelling with this set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Same great game, horrendous packaging, March 2, 2002

I've rediscovered scrabble to become one of my favorite games. I have owned the standard edition for some time, and I was pleased with it's very reasonable price, simplicity, and durability of the pieces. And I don't think I need to repeat the glowing praise of other posts about the ingenuity of the game itself.

This is why I am very, very disappointed with the recent decline in the quality of these scrabble series by Milton-Bradley. I have purchased a second set for my friend and a travel version for myself, only to discover that the board on the standard edition is not evenly glued, along with tacky background. And the true horror struck me as I opened the travel edition, hopeful that the increased price would bring me a better quality package.

I was completely appalled by the horrible craftsmanship of this set. Cheap plastic is used throughout the case, and (as mentioned by the other posts) the cardboard was found dislodged from the clear plastic case. It would have been somewhat reasonable if that occurred during the shipment, but upon further inspection, I found that both hinges had cracks in it, as well as the ruddy-brown, untextured plastic cover had a large scratch across it. Furthermore, one of the pin which holds the hinge together was missing, and other was loose, and could not be put back because it was bent.

I find this product to be an insult to the users. While I would pay triple this price to get a more well crafted, elegantly designed set (why not a leather box travel edition? I would buy that in a second!), it either does not exist or not well distributed.

Anyway, I have seen the older pocket edition, and I am going to search for a seller soon. Do not buy this product, it is not even worth the price of the standard edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could be better, January 7, 2003

As an avid scrabble fan I was thrilled to find out there was a travel version. Upon receiving the travel game as a gift, however, I was a little disappointed with some of its features.

In this version the grid has raised edges which are meant to keep the tiles in place. Unfortunately, there is still room for the tiles to move around and a high chance of them being displaced if there is a bump or accident during play. I had envisioned the grid being something that the tiles would snap into, thereby avoiding disaster of any kind. Snap-in tiles would also make it possible to save a game in progress and come back to it later. I thought that this was an advertised feature, but I haven't yet figured out how you could successfully save a game and pack it away with the current design.

There is a storage space beneath the grid which is very handy for all of the materials, but the way it opens up is cheaply constructed. The plastic separates from the actual grid so that the board and the grid do not match up quite right when viewing. I solved the issue with some scotch tape, but I would have thought the makers could have designed this better.

All in all, scrabble lovers will love the game just because they can play it wherever and whenever they want. Just a few construction issues that lowered my rating.

I am very pleased with this edition of Scrabble. Unlike some games' travel editions, this one is completely self-contained. Once you get everything ready, you can recycle the box, because you will have everything you need inside the game's sturdy case. There's even room for a pad and pencil for scorekeeping. The case locks very well when it is closed, ensuring that the tiles inside stay inside. The closed case measures about 11 x 6.5 x 1.5 inches. It's small enough to take with you, but big enough to be comfortably functional. Once played, tiles are held in place very effectively by a sturdy plastic grid. The tiles aren't secured magnetically, so a barrel-roll will end the game, but it won't be deterred by light air turbulence or a bumpy road.

A great game for traveling. It fits on the meal tray of airplanes and any table area in airport lobbys. Its portable and can be played while relaxing poolside in Mexico and sipping a margarita. Not as durable as I'd like. I've had mine for about eight months and have traveled with it multiple times. Through general airline baggage handling, the playing board has become disconnected from the casing. I'd also like a version with a rotating board, like the larger deluxe version.
