Scrabble Crossword Game - Glass Signature Edition

PROS:
1. It's beautiful.
2. The base seems sturdy, and the top parts of the base have little wheels so the board turns smoothly (much more so than my old "Deluxe" edition). The bottom of the base has small foam "feet" so it won't damage furniture or slide around.
3. The tiles are printed instead of engraved, so the blank doesn't feel any different than the others.
4. The box is sturdy. It will keep the game safe. I'm sure the box itself will get scuffed up on the corners, but it opens with a flap instead of just lifting off so it should keep its shape. (It's also HUGE. I have no idea where we'll keep it.)
5. Did I mention the base turns smoothly? This is really the best new feature for this game. I'm very happy with this.

CONS:
1. The grid is more shallow so you have to be more careful placing the tiles. The tiles are thinner, which helps, and since the board turns smoothly they don't slide out. (This is also a "pro": it's much easier to put the tiles away.)
2. They changed the colors of the bonus squares. Enough said.
3. The tile bag is pretty but too small. Putting it down carelessly lets tiles spill out, and when opening it to get tiles it's easier to accidentally see inside.
4. The racks are cheap thin plastic. At least they are taller, so less likely to tip over. (What were they thinking? With a board this nice, why not make the racks nice too?)

I have no problem with the different colors on the double word score, triple word score, double letter score etc. It is still the same old Scrabble we all love. The glass top is really classy. Not many friends will have this model. I agree that I wish there were better letter holders but next time I see a scrabble game at a garage sale for a buck...I will have four more wooden ones.

I've owned this version of Scrabble for a year now.

Pros:
Hefty
Smooth turning
The tiles are smooth because the letters are painted on
The tiles remain on the board where placed
The board itself is very nice.

Cons:
The letters easily scratch and will prematurely wear off for lack of a protective coating
The bonus square color scheme is inconsistent with all other versions of Scrabble I've ever seen
The tiles fall out of the racks too easily

Other:
I wish the tiles weighed a little more. I'd like the tiles to be clear-coated. Hasbro doesn't make purchase of replacement tiles easy.

Scrabble is a great game that most everyone knows how to play, so I won't go into play specifics here. The game does come with short, very easy to understand rules, so those of you who need some help with rules have this as a great resource for learning the game. This edition of the Scrabble game is great to look at, so it won't bother you to keep it out all of the time - even with guests over. Very good construction, the board itself has a very sturdy feel. The tiles and tile racks are also well made and fit the aesthetic theme. I can see why some people would like the tiles and the racks to be 'heavier,' but it isn't like these are poorly made, and I can see them lasting a long time. It also comes with a classy looking score book and pencil to keep track of the game scores easily. The best feature of this edition is the glass surface. It looks incredible, and it rotates smoothly and effortlessly. I have never had a problem with the tiles being knocked out of place when the surface is rotating. The box is huge, but needs to be since the game takes up a lot of space, especially when trying to protect the glass surface. I can't imagine the glass ever chipping or showing a ton of finger prints.

Overall, this edition of a classic game is worth spending a bit more on. It is extremely well constructed, and it looks great. Hours upon hours of fun gameplay to be had in this giant box. Scrabble isn't necessarily for everyone, so try it out on a cheaper edition before taking the plunge on this more expensive version. Happy Scrabble-ing!

My daughter has been wanted this particular scrabble, but I had a hard time finding it. I put it on my wish list and sort of forgot all about it. One day I thought I would check my list and there it was. I was thrilled but wasn't sure if it was the one I wanted, because Hasbro said no longer made. Well I bought it, sent it to my daughter and it was the one. It came just in time for her birthday, so everyone was happy. Thanks Amazon.

The new color scheme was not well thought out and is not liked by the public.
