Book Lover's Scrabble extends the traditional scrabble game by widening your word choice. The plot twist cards help out when you get stuck. My family and I love scrabble! We played this version more than the original one.

A long-time fan of traditional Scrabble, I was greatly excited when this version was released! I hold a degree in English and love to read, so this seemed like the best of two worlds.

I wasn't disappointed! Not only can players use proper nouns related to books, such as titles, authors and key character names, there are also cards giving suggestions of special plays for extra points, e.g. to give a title in a foreign language, to play a word even if it doesn't fit entirely on the board within the allotted space, etc.

Some reviewers complained that the letter tiles are flimsy, but I didn't find them to be anything but the usual kind. However, I must say that it CAN be extremely difficult to read the letters in certain lighting, as they are stamped in gold that hits the light oddly.

Our family enjoys playing games together, and we also like to read. A lot. With a teenage daughter who wishes to become a librarian someday, this seemed like a perfect gift. We were not disappointed.

First, we were very impressed by the materials. The solid wood racks and wooden letter tiles really helped the game feel more serious than the typical off-the-shelf cardboard and plastic game. This begins with the basic Scrabble board, but one can quickly see that there's more to it. At the bottom of the board (thick folded cardboard as expected), points are listed for different lengths of literary bonus words.

Here is where the difference lies. What is a literary bonus, you ask? Unlike the regular letter-laying game, a player is not only allowed to play proper nouns, but a name of an author, a word from a book title, or character name is encouraged and earns additional points. (Frustrated that Oz can never be played in Scrabble? It can now, as long as you can give us the title where it appears. Or JRR? It's the name of an author J.R.R. Tolkien! So a new word for you.)

And to add a fun random element, each player has three plot twist cards, displayed along a back slot in the tile rack. The cards are such thing as "editor's choice," allowing you to take a tile from other players; "choose your adventure," where you can play a word anywhere on the board (except a triple word space); or "cliffhanger," letting you play a letter over the board's edge. Cards such as "sequel," "plagiarism," "compilation," "typo," and many others made this particularly fun, Each card does can only be used once, and a new card is drawn to take its place.

More challenge in some ways but more options to balance. Defining rules is the hardest part. The shiny letters are a little hard to read, and the board is not as substantial as our original Scrabble, but we just use the original board and letters.

If you like scrabble, you probably will enjoy this version! The bonus card are great but they also make the game fell a bit unbalanced.

This version of Scrabble is great fun as it adds interesting and challenging literary dimensions to an already outstanding game. The only improvement I would make is to offer it in the revolving tray version like the basic game.
