I had to make a choice between the DS version of the game and the PSP version of the game. After reading reviews of the DS version I opted for the PSP Scrabble. I am not dissapointed at all. This game is great fun!
I can't speak as someone who has extensive Scrabble experience but I enjoyed playing the game growing up and then with my kids now. I would consider myself a casual player. I find the AI is fine--but not very challenging at the early levels. The controls work very well--no complaints. I suppose the only complain I would have is that the AI uses strange words and a LOT of 2 letter words. This can reduce the fun since it is tough to build off of 2 letter words in many cases. I would also say whatever dictionary this one has is ODD. The Computer uses word like Ki (Chi as in Chinese Chi) but it won't let me use Zen. So there are occasional dissapointments and a sort of wonderment of what that word is that the AI is using but not enough to detract from the entire experience. As for anyone who is a much more serious Scrabble player than me I am not sure the level of challenge here will be sufficient although I haven't played through the whole game yet. As an enjoyable just before bed or lunch break diversion this gets top marks from me!

I've played this game a lot on the subway and on my once a month business trips. It does the trick as far as passing time. Playing as a single player, I think it will help you improve your normal game if you play in unchallenge mode as you can experiment with different words since the computer will let you know if the word doesn't exist before you actually play it.
The only negative is that the hardest level is too difficult for me, the computer players are always busting out long words I've never heard of using all their tiles. The next level down isn't hard enough in my opinion. On that level, it seems like the computer doesn't utilize board strategy very well i.e. using an 'S' in the middle of a sentence, not capitalizing on a TW, etc. I say get this game if you are even a casual Scrabble player, as I'm sure it'll be a game you can pickup and play for a long time.

I'm a big fan of Scrabble, and have been since I was a kid. I found this PSP version to be very fun, easy to get into and adjust to, and the game AI to be well rounded(as in not cheating all the time as in another Scrabble game I bought for the PC). I really enjoy the sound effects and the music for this game. It is really fresh and upbeat, and doesn't bore me after playing it for hours, unlike other games I've played. I'm 25, and I think this would be perfect for a child to an elderly person. I also thought the game icons were kinda cool. Another redeeming feature I would say is how the game adjust to your difficulty level as you progress. So you don't have to be an expert at Scrabble to enjoy this game, and beginner should like it just as much, if not more.
Thanks Hasbro & Sony

I bought this game hoping it would be like the one I down loaded from my cell phone. It is not. I returned it because unless you are sitting under a bright light you cant see the board. The playing board is too small and once you start filling up the squares it is hard to tell which are your tiles and the board of words you have played. After approximately 8 plays - the game is over. A totally waste of money. I dont recommend this version to anyone.

At first I thought this would be a nice game to play during road trips but quickly found myself losing to the following "words" used by the computer opponent:
AE OE OI AL After it literally used "youse" (as in 'hey, youse guys") I tried "dook", which it would not take as a valid word. [...]

Bought this mainly for my wife to play. She beats me every time and the computer most of the time. A fun way to spend some family time. We both enjoy it very much.

Scrabble for the PSP supports only 4th ed OSPD. Great little trainer with nice graphics and unlockable 'themes' and avatars. Pretty and functional design.
Pros: Entire OSPD 4th ed included, word finder, plenty of interesting training puzzles, controls are functional. Cons: No OWL or SOWPODS support. |
