Got scraps? Find 18 projects, each made from 2-1/2" strips, in this 80-page book that includes ideas for using pre-cut strips, hosting a strip swap, raiding your scrap basket, and sorting and storing. --American Patchwork & Quilting magazine

Scrap Basket Surprises features 18 quilts, all made from 2-1/2" strips, so this book is jelly roll friendly. Kim Bracket teaches you how to make your own scrap basket of strips from using stash fabrics, pre-cut strips, strip swaps and new fabrics. She also explains clever ways to sort and store the 2-1/2" strips you will be collecting for your projects in the book.

There are also basic quiltmaking instructions with wonderful graphics that are very easy to follow, which is important for us quilters. This is a great book for a beginner quilter but also is appropriate for any quilter who needs a weekend or retreat project. These are projects that will appeal to a range of styles, from country to contemporary, '30s to Americana and more. I chose this book for its variety. I won't buy a book unless I want to make several projects from it, and this book has many appealing quilts! --connectingthreads.com

About the Author

Kim Brackett developed an interest in quilting in 1988 after admiring a collection of vintage quilts displayed in an antique shop. She began gathering tools, fabrics, and patterns and finally finished her first quilt 10 years later. Since then she has completed countless quilts, many of which have been featured in her books. Kim works full-time as a paralegal in Pensacola, Florida, and is a member of the Pensacola Quilters Guild.

I love this book. It is rare for me to like more than a couple patterns in a book. I want to make so many of the quilts in this book that I can't decide where to start. The instructions are straight-forward and easy to follow. It includes directions for cutting from yardage or scraps. Patterns are jelly roll friendly (2-1/2 inch strips) but the strips are not obvious in most of the finished quilts. This would be great for a fabric exchange.

It seems like there is not much new in patterns and books. But I really liked this one! I paid full price (which I never do!) at a quilt shop because I liked it so much. I purchased two more from Amazon for gifts. There are 18 patterns in this book and I want to make at least 10 of them. Plus it gives cutting and yardage requirements for both jelly rolls (2 ½" strips) and scraps, and I am always looking for good scrap patterns.

I love this book and think that most quilters would find a pattern to make out of it.

On the positive side. After looking inside the book and reading the reviews I ordered it. There are a lot of lovely quilts and several I will probably make as the layouts really pop. Also, everyone gave a 5 star rating. There are very good directions for making the quilts and they are extensive.

The disappointment factor came because with the exception of a couple of the patterns each and every pattern is basically the same cut and sew. I wish someone would have mentioned this as I could have saved myself the cost of the book. It's easy to see how the pieces go together and then you do the layout you want. I was expecting a lot of different techniques and ways to put the jelly rolls together. Instead a majority of the patterns say to refer to page 19 instructions for sewing the pieces together.

The difference in each quilt is the layout and those are terrific. If you don't mind stitching the same thing with very little variation, this book is definitely for you.

Finally a book using 2-1/2 in strips either from jelly rolls or your own stash that has some grown up and sophisticated quilt designs. I'm so tired of all the books out there that are full of simple, common and ordinary ways of just sewing strips together with no imagination. The quilts in this book are imaginative and stunning in their simplicity and will work with whatever fabric is in your stash. I've already made the cover quilt and have more ready to get busy on. I hope this author has more to come.

Although each quilt is intended to be made with assorted 2 1/2" strips from either your stash or from a jelly roll or two, many would be equally beautiful as a 2- or 3-color quilt. I love the variety of colorways shown in the photos such as citrus, mocha, patriotic, pastels, earthtones, jeweltones, etc., and also the variety of fabric styles - from traditional to batiks. Their breadth demonstrates that each quilt would have a completely different look in a different combination of fabrics.

For those who are purchasing fabric yardage directly and not using jelly rolls or fabric scraps (especially for the background), it is helpful to know that 3 strips = 1/4 yd., 7 strips = 1/2 yd., 10 strips = 3/4 yd., and 14 strips = 1 yd.

Some of the patterns are perfect for beginners while others are better suited to more experienced quilters. The book is relatively complete in its instructions and would only be enhanced by offering other size quilts since all of them are between 48" and 72" - baby quilt to "throw" size.

All those pieces of left over binding (if you make yours 2 ½ inches like I do) are just floating around waiting for this book. Each quilt is made from 2 ½" strips. Of course, if you are a new quilter and don't have the "left-overs", you can always buy a jelly roll or cut your own 2 ½" pieces from yardage.

18 quilts will give you lots of choices to make. But before the instructions, there are 14 pages of general information to get you started on the right track. Each project shows a color photo of the finished quilt complete with finished block and quilt size. Material and cutting lists show you what you need to have material-wise plus what size to cut it into.

Block assembly has plenty of graphics to make sure you are on the right track and there is another graphic showing how to assemble the quilt. Quilt as desired is the only given instruction for quilting.

The block types are varied and are very straight forward to sew. No curves here. Grab a copy and start using up all those lonely scraps.

Instructions in the book are clear and easy to follow. The quilts are fun to make and use up scraps that are in the scrap basket. I have enjoyed using the techniques to make these beautiful quilts in the book.
