Innovative quilt designer JOAN FORD cleverly founded the ScrapTherapy(TM) program in 2006 as a way to help quilters get organized and cope with the clutter of fabric collected over the years. When I saw this book was on the way out, I was excited. I have needed someone to teach me how to deal with all the fabric scraps I have collected for the past 20 years. I had to read the book first, but now I am ready to really get moving on my stash. The suggestions were good ideas, right to the point, and easy to do. This is a great book for beginners, just learning how to quilt, because the author goes into great detail and the pictures make the instructions easy to follow. I can't wait to actually get started on some of the projects.

I've been quilting since before my kids were born, so I've got scraps. By the tons. And sadly, that's not really much hyperbole. But I digress....
What I liked about this book is that it gave some real, concrete ideas for dealing with your scrap pile(s!), but also tried to keep it realistic. Joan Ford says to get rid of your teeny, tiny pieces (the smallest piece she has you cutting and keeping is a 2" square--and honestly, at this point in my life I'm not sure I really want to sew together pieces smaller than that anyway), or, if you're not ready for that yet, put them in a container, date it, and if you haven't used any of them a year later, toss it. This was...liberating. I have tendency to keep every single viable scrap--and even some not so viable--when I really don't have the room for them. But precut squares? I can handle them! The idea of having your leftover scraps already cut into usable squares, ready to go at a minute's notice was a good one too--I've already spent a few TV nights cutting up my former scrap piles, and the plastic shoebox idea keeps them much better organized than the baskets and boxes they were in before did. Joan explains her reasoning for the three sizes of squares that she recommends, and they do make sense to quilters--especially the 5" ones, since charm packs are so plentiful and inexpensive these days. I loved the idea of being able to see a pattern, grab a box of squares, and go!
As for her patterns, they did tend toward the traditional--and lots of half square triangles!--which was fine, but I'd say at this time that I'd probably make only about half of them. That's okay, though. It's nearly impossible to discover a quilt book in which every single quilt screams, "Create me!". Often it's enough just to see what other quilters have done with their fabrics and colors to give you the spark of an idea. This book definitely offered plenty to look at, think about, and do. Definitely a keeper!

Holy Moley--I'm going to do this! This book came in today and I browsed through it--and the first thing I read was the 7 step plan to get those scraps under control. :) I have been shucking scraps like crazy the last couple of years--I donated huge sacks at quilt guild, bags of them to my art teacher daughter for her students' projects--and still--they accumulate!
I was delighted to see that Joan Ford has adopted the same mantra I decided on a couple years ago.
"I will quilt this stash into quilts before I kick the bucket if it's the last thing I do." "I will not be that poor woman whose lifetime stash is dumped at quilt guild because no one else in the family quilts."
I have quite a few other scrappy quilting books, but this one looks much better thought out with having only 3 sizes of blocks to cut.
And wouldn't you know it--I got back yesterday from a quilting class (Bali Fever) where I bought this really huge and sharp rotary cutter (I've never had a really big mama like this before and whoah does it cut, cut, cut :) And that nice Judy Neimeyer even showed me how to cut curves freehand with it--boy- can I ever cut good now.)
So you can see, when step 2 in this book is "The Cutting workshop"--hey--my big mama rotary is revved and ready :)
The patterns look doable--and I particularly like the 2 tote bags and the table runner--because then you can give them away for gifts.
I also like the fact that these patterns are based on mostly squares instead of strips--I already have tons of books and patterns that will turn strips into scrappy creations--but I like having patterns to turn all those wadded up pieces into something functional. :) And she tells you up front what you will need to organize them.Read more ›

I am a Quilt Shop owner and used this book as the basis for a demonstration. What appealed to me was that after your scraps are cut and organized, you can simply dip into your totes of scraps and start making quilts with the patterns in the book. My customers appreciated that there was a cutting/organizational piece first and then something to do with them: 15 projects! I don't like to order in books for my store that only have one or two good patterns for my customers. I felt this book really delivered and experienced as well as novice quilters bought the book and are starting on projects. THe patterns may not be new, but the system, combined with the patterns has "connected the dots" for many with large accumulations of scraps that they didn't know what to do with. I would reccommend this book.

I was expecting something new. Most of the quilting patterns are not recent, but are the "Scrap Therapy" patterns that came out with the concept. The misc. projects in the book weren't anything I haven't already made or ones I don't want to make. I may later pass this book along as a "re-gift" to someone. I was disappointed and wouldn't suggest buying unless you don't already have the original "Scrap Therapy" patterns .
