Review

"Kimberly Wiefling's delightful Scrappy Women in Business shatters the myth that the road to success depends on careful foresight and planning. By dissecting the diverse paths taken by eleven successful women, this book demonstrates why the virtues of persistence, improvisation, and embracing messiness and unpredictability are hallmarks of great leaders--and why the ability to develop and stick to a master plan is an overrated virtue." --Robert I. Sutton, http://bobsutton.typepad.com/, Stanford Professor and author of Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best...and Learn from the Worst, http://amzn.to/bL1Y6R

"Kimberly Wiefling has created a book that should be required for women of all ages...regardless of whether they are self-employed or employees (and, if an employee, regardless of their 'level' within a company). Each woman featured in this book has achieved significant career success (based on their own personal definition of 'success')and never let obstacles deter their journey. During the toughest times, faced with the biggest challenges, they tapped into their creativity, gut, and brains, and pushed through. Even as a successful twenty-year business owner myself, I learned valuable information from each of their stories and was inspired by all of them." --Lisa Orrell, CPC, The Promote U Guru, Branding Expert, Marketing Consultant, Business Coach, Speaker & Author, PromoteUGuru.com, http://www.PromoteUGuru.com

"Ever have a day when everything goes wrong and you feel lost, defeated, and ready to quit? Well that is when you need to pick up this book and read a chapter. It will energize you with stories of women who faced tough challenges, and beat the odds on their road to success. These stories will save your sanity, keep you afloat and inspire you to pursue your dreams. Keep it handy when you need an energy boost!" --Mala Devlin, Author of The Software Soul, http://amzn.to/96EdtT

"Scrappy Women in Business is a terrific shot in the arm of a book for all of us out there building our lives and our careers on the front lines of the 21st Century. The book is an empowering combination of the honest, wise, practical and humorous advice and experiences of a dozen remarkable women. Kimberly's own compelling story unfolds through the commentary she uses to weave together the remarkable stories of her eleven high-achieving colleagues. Here are intriguing examples and very practical advice to encourage you to keep on keeping on, scrappily changing the status quo while living up to your own potential and improving the lives and environment all around you. As Kimberly so aptly sums up in her book, 'Wooo hooo!'" --Leslie Field, Ph.D., Founder and Managing Member of SmallTech Consulting, LLC, http://www.smalltechconsulting.com/, Founder and CEO of Ice911 Research Corporation, http://ice911.org/, Consulting Professor in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, http://www.stanford.edu/%7Elafield/

"You've heard of the theory of "Six Degrees of Separation?" In Silicon Valley I haven't yet been able to make it more than three degrees before people are connected to Kimberly Wiefling. Everyone has a story to tell about Kimberley. Everyone who's been in her sphere of influence --Sandra A. Clark, Director of Communications, UCSC Extension in Silicon Valley, http://www.ucsc-extension.edu/

She is the author of one of the top project management books in the US, "Scrappy Project Management - The 12 Predictable and Avoidable Pitfalls Every Project Faces", a book growing in popularity around the world, and published in Japanese by Nikkei Business Press. She is the passion at the core of Wiefling Consulting, LLC, a global leadership and business management consulting firm that is a collaboration among excellent professionals from diverse fields. She currently spends about half of her time working with high-potential leaders in Japanese companies, facilitating leadership, innovation and execution excellence workshops to enable Japanese companies to solve global problems profitably. She is the Executive Program Director for ALC Education, Inc's Global Management Consulting Business.

A physicist by education, and a successful business leadership and project management consultant for the past 10 years, she began her professional career working for a decade at HP in product development project management and engineering leadership. 5.0 out of 5 stars Six Things I Appreciated About Scrappy Women in Business, September 29, 2010

This review is from: Scrappy Women in Business: Living Proof that Bending the Rules Isn't Breaking the Law (Paperback)
1. I've never experienced an anthology as real and juicy as SWiB. The stories of these 12 women felt delightfully revealing of how it was for them--the unexpurgated version.

2. This book wonderfully honors the messiness of one's life journey, especially when you're going for the "impossible."

3. "Going for the impossible" is an important message for our times. We no longer have the luxury of only thinking incrementally.

4. It's been a male-dominated world for the last 5000 years. The world needs for women to step into their power and majesty if we are to move toward wholeness during the next 5000 years. In this book 12 pathfinders describe what it means to take that step.

5. The book is designed as a collection of digestible bites. You can treat yourself to intermittent snacks or go for the 12-course meal.

6. "Bending the Rules Isn't Breaking the Law." I love it! Until we create rules that are truly generative for all affected, we need to become master rule-benders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scrappy Women in Business Inspires us Trust our Own Path Forward, October 10, 2010

This review is from: Scrappy Women in Business: Living Proof that Bending the Rules Isn't Breaking the Law (Paperback)
I first encountered Kimberly Wiefling's authentic voice when I was studying for my project management certification and was looking for a more grounded and salty perspective than what I found in PMBOK, the industry's official guidebook. To my utter delight, Wiefling delivered an honest, pragmatic and hilarious perspective in her book, Scrappy Project Management. Needless to say I read Scrappy Women in Business with great expectations which, once again, Wiefling delivered. Through this collection of scrappy women who share their life stories, we are able to see the larger themes of all pioneering women. It's easy to be inspired by their undaunted courage in the face of frequent self-doubt, perseverance when roadblocks pop up, ability to learn from failures and create a future for themselves with very limited resources. We are also able to come to grips with the fact that there isn't a typical "track" forward for women in business. Their stories allow us to be confident and trust that our own unconventional path can lead to success and fulfillment, if it hasn't already. These scrappy women also remind us to "own" our capabilities and recognize that many people and companies have already benefited from the wisdom we've gained in our journey along the way.

I liken scrappy women to fine wine. They say the best wine is made from grapes that come from vines that are planted on rocky hillsides where the roots have to struggle to dig deep into the ground to reach water. Scrappy women know how to "dig deep" and their results in business have proven very fruitful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scrappy Women In Business, August 21, 2010
This review is from: Scrappy Women in Business: Living Proof that Bending the Rules Isn't Breaking the Law (Paperback)
This is a great read - insightful, funny, inspirational, motivational and totally relatable. Reading these stories led me to reflect on my own journey - the good, the bad, the ups, the downs. Everything I've gone through and all the changes that I've made have brought me to where I am today. We need to continue to be open to ideas and growth and realize that every opportunity is a learning experience so we need to learn from it. This book has made me realize that I don't know where I will ultimately end up, but for now, I'm just where I'm suppose to be. Great gift for anyone who is still searching, in between jobs or really anyone who is open to growth.
