5.0 out of 5 stars Eric Bogle is one of the most compelling lyricists ever.
On so many compelling themes, Eric Bogle has composed some of the most meaningful and artistic lyrics and music of anyone I have ever heard. His thematic range is virtually unlimited. 3.0 out of 5 stars Oh well
Bogle has written great songs on occasion. I heard him first interpreted through the lovely June Tabor. But alas, Bogle's singing and some of his songwriting suffer from an amount of sentimentality.

On so many compelling themes, Eric Bogle has composed some of the most meaningful and artistic lyrics and music of anyone I have ever heard. His thematic range is virtually unlimited. From anti-war to social conscientious themes on children and the elderly he blows me away with the creativity and flow of his words and music. I have heard him live in concert here in Ballard (Seattle) and was not disappointed. Anyone who is moved by socially compelling themes in a folk/coffee house style should become familiar with Eric Bogle. He also has a lot of fun, funny, lively, music as well! I put him right up there with Pete, Seger, Woodie Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springstine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anzac Day, April 23, 2005
This review is from: Scraps of Paper (Audio CD)
I heard "And they played Waltzing Matilda" on CBC for Anzac Day. I almost had to park for the weeping. This song has implications for the fighting in Iraq.

5.0 out of 5 stars extremely moving and well presented, a quality album for all, July 16, 1999
This review is from: Scraps of Paper (Audio CD)
I had the pleasure to hear eric live @ a festival in Dunedin, NZ 15+ yrs ago. After which I purchased this album on tape and it still brings me pleasure to this day, particularly last track side 2. I have passed this to other people of all ages recently and they have all enjoyed listening to Eric and his music. I would totally recommend to all this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt sad songs, August 2, 2005
This review is from: Scraps of Paper (Audio CD)
I was quite impressed by the man's terrific tenor voice. I bought the album for the songs, never having heard him sing. What a nice surprise!
The only down point was that, as a folk music lover,I thought the album was overproduced. However,I will buy more...

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Addition to Anybody's Collection, January 17, 2009
This review is from: Scraps of Paper (Audio CD)
I discovered this wonderful album back in 1993 or 94, I guess. It truly has never left "front row" so to speak on my shelves, meaning that I have never put it away on the shelves and not taken it out regularly and replayed it. It is a landmark album, I feel, and needs to be "witnessed" if you will, by yourself, to see what I mean.

There simply IS NOT another voice like Eric Bogle's anywhere in the whole world, nor is there a songwriter today of folk/story-songs that can touch this awesomely talented man.

Merely click down through the selections above for your sampling, and you will see what I mean...sadly, of course, they are very short! One needs to experience "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" all the way through, in a quiet reflective atmosphere, and also many others of these sad, touching, and in some cases, rollickingly funny songs.

You will, I feel, want to "build a collection" of Eric's albums, but this is the place where you should start, for certain.

Jolly Good Stuff, for sure.
Do Enjoy,
operabruin

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have album, December 22, 2000
This review is from: Scraps of Paper (Audio CD)
I started listening to this album about 15 years ago and still appreciate every cut on it. I identify with Eric Bogel and appreciate his talent both as a writer and a singer. Starting with Scraps of Paper and on through the rest of the album, there is not a bad cut.
