5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Detectives, May 2, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Scrapyard Detectives Collected Cases Vol.1 (Paperback)
This review is from my 10 year old, after this was sent to us, just yesterday, by a dear friend.

I loved it very much. The whole idea of kid super spies is... well... awsome. Jinn is my favorite character . I am a lot like her. I love solving mysteries and reading and watching them too. Also, I think that the air bike is verry cool and how Raymond saved Ben is sooo cool. The brain behind it all(Robert) is also helpful like when he made the pressure sensitive pad to find who started the fire. Over all the book was verry enjoyable and I wish to read more of the series of the collected scrapyard detectives.By: Amanda Standridge

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It, January 25, 2008
This review is from: The Scrapyard Detectives Collected Cases Vol.1 (Paperback)
I read this with my little boy on a regular basis and we love it. I love that it covers relevant issues in a fun way. It is easy to then discuss difficult topics with my son that otherwise I do not know if I would approach. It is a
great learning tool and I am grateful to have it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great offering from an up and coming artist., January 15, 2008

This review is from: The Scrapyard Detectives Collected Cases Vol.1 (Paperback)
The Scrapyard Detectives is a great series of stories designed to make kids think a little more broadly and fairly and realize that the world they live in is much bigger than their own individual experience.

Used to promote the cause of the non-profit Smiles for Diversity, The Scrapyard Detectives is Artist Bill Galvan's creation. The stories are complete and the artwork is as good or better than you will find in any production comic. Because of it's educational nature, it lacks the POP and FIZZ of standard comic book fare, but what it lacks in sizzle, it more than makes up for in steak. With a circulation of over 70,000 the message of diversity and tolerance is in a lot of young hands.

Bill Galvan is an up and coming artist already making his mark with Archie Comics as well as others. This would be a good item to add to your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great set of books!, January 4, 2008
This review is from: The Scrapyard Detectives Collected Cases Vol.1 (Paperback)
When I first heard of this book, I was more interested in it for the artwork and the project than the actual story. Bill Galvan is one my favorite Archie comics artists, and I knew nothing of the Diversity Foundation. Upon reading this first great graphic novel I discovered a few things: first, Bill's art has more potential than I'd ever imagined, and second: that one doesn't have to dress in tights and fight supervillains in order to change the world.

This book is about three normal 8th graders who create a club dedicated to solving mysteries. Very much in line with the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries of old, but with a modern feel. The kids promote racial
harmony and are racially balanced, but they act like kids, not mini adults. The mysteries they solve may not be earth-shattering (Why did someone destroy a bed of roses? Who's stealing food from the club's refrigerator?), but these mysteries lead to a bigger story and a better understanding of the people that live in their community. The stories deal with subjects that appear in everyday life, subjects that most major comic book publishers don't touch. Best of all, these stories are for children, as well as the child in every adult.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a graphic novel that contains true to life stories, fun characters and revelant stories.... stories about mysteries, friendship and tolerance that avoid being preachy or heavy-handed. I especially recommend it for anyone with children. Very well done. Can't wait for the next issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent graphic novel, April 24, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Scrapyard Detectives Collected Cases Vol.1 (Paperback)
This is a great graphic novel on so many different levels. The stories are excellently written. The premise of three friends working together solving mysteries, using parts they find in a scrapyard is every kid's dream. The artwork is excellent.

Also, this book tackles the difficult topic of diversity. It's really tough to write about diversity without being preachy, and this book does it by telling great stories.

This book is the book equivalent to the Iron Giant or the Spy Kids movies. It tells a fun story for kids, but it's of such high quality that adults will love it, too.

And, I really like comic books but it's sometimes risky to buy them for kids. This really is a comic book I'm comfortable buying for every kid I know.
