I found Jazz for the Skeptical Guitarist at the library a few years ago and checked it out; it explained (some aspects of) music to me in a way I'd never understood before.

At the time, I wrote to the author in hopes that he'd written an equivalent for piano, but I was out of luck; Bruce teaches guitar. So when I found myself learning guitar and realizing that the web-based free lessons weren't going to be enough, I came to Amazon to look over the beginner instruction books and saw Bruce Emery's name in the list. Bingo!

The Skeptical Guitarist will lead you to local sources for these books in your area. Very very accessible information. I haven't looked at the other books; I can't say whether they're as good or different or provide more information. I know my money's going pretty much straight to the guy who wrote the book, not the owners of the series; it so happens I could find him in person if I really cared to and I know he'll answer email; the presentation suits my learning style. In time, I'll probably own most of these books but the first 10 pages of this one has given me enough to start on for now.
