From Booklist

What seems a routine task lands Detective Constable Iona Khan in the midst of a crucial operation without support from colleagues. Just selected to the Manchester Counterterrorism Unit, Khan (half Scottish, half Pakistani) follows a tip from a secretive group that explores tunnels under the city about someone using fake ID. Turns out the man in question is from Mauritius with a new degree in chemical engineering and has been seen with his cousin, who’s suspected of brutally murdering a former British law lord in Mauritius. With the high-level Labour Party conference about to begin in Manchester, Khan reports her suspicions about a terrorist plot only to have them ignored by Superintendent Paul Wallace, her cruel and racially biased boss. Fortunately, Khan’s former boyfriend, Sergeant Jim Stephens, of the Manchester PD, who knows Wallace all too well from army service, believes her and has her back. Simms, author of the DI Jon Spicer series, skillfully builds tension in this procedural featuring an appealing protagonist, a persevering biracial woman in a man’s world. --Michele Leber

Review

"Plenty of tension, a likeable heroine and some superb set-pieces in the claustrophobic subterranean tunnels add up to an exhilarating read" (The Guardian)

"All in all 'Scratch Deeper' is a taut, tense and thrilling novel which demanded my attention from first page to last. Let’s just hope he doesn’t make us wait another eighteen months for the next masterpiece" (Crimesquad.com)

More About the Author

Chris Simms has worked in airports, nightclubs, post offices and telesales centres. Along with nominations for Crime Writer's Association Daggers and the Theakston's Crime Novel of the Year award for his novels and short stories, Chris was selected by Waterstone's as one of their '25 authors for the future'.

Chris says he is drawn to books that give insights into unusual minds. The twisted desires of Frederick in John Fowles', The Collector, the tormented thoughts of Scobie in Graham Greene's Heart of the Matter, the violent urges of Francie in Patrick McCabe's Butcher Boy - all are books that influenced Chris as a writer. The idea for his debut novel, Outside the White Lines, came to him in the early hours of the morning while broken down on the hard shoulder of the M40.

His series of DI Spicer novels - psychological thrillers set very firmly in Manchester - follow the police detective's fortunes as he pursues criminal and deadly individuals through the city's ever-changing landscape. In October 2012 Chris launched a new series starring DC Khan, a new recruit to Manchester police's Counter Terrorism Unit.

I thought this story was intriguing with an interesting plot line . Unlike the previous reviewer I did enjoy the use of description used in the book. I would be interested in reading further stories based on Iona Khan.

Way too much description and detail. Do we really need to know she took off the cap of her brio and started to write? I quit about 1/3rd of the way through the book.
