I really wanted to get into this book, but the formatting is not compatible for my kindle. It became too difficult to try to work my way through each recipe (no table of contents to click to each item) and then the recipe itself is formatted in a way that made it too much work to figure out the ingredients and if I wanted to make the item. I never got to the point that I wanted to try any of the items so I am not reviewing this book based off of the recipes themselves (they might be fabulous and worth the effort?). However, I have many kindle recipe books and would rather go to one of those to find what I want to bake then try to figure out what might be good in this book. I got this for free on Amazon and would have been pretty ticked off if I would have paid for it and then had to deal with the formatting. Again, the recipes might be worth the formatting headaches as I did not get that far in this book and I normally do not review a cookbook until I've tried at least 10 of the recipes.

This book really feels like it was made with care, from the easy and clear formatting to the evocative introduction - I too fondly remember those wonderful aromas of baking from childhood, when my mum had a small business making special occasion cakes. The tips and tricks at the start are welcome reminders to a trained chef such as myself (albeit for a couple of years in 1986!) and the recipes themselves are easy to follow, have a nice little personal intro, clear photographs and all the nutritional information that you might ever need.

An excellent addition to to everybody's Kindle - buy it!

The recipes look very good, and I especially would like to try the Fruity Fruit Cake. Unfortunately, the ebook formatting is very bad. The ingredients appear to have been in a table format that did not translate well to the Kindle Fire HD.

Some of the recipe ingredients show up as a "?" mark. A recipe book needs to be accurate, especially in baking.

Jenny Collins writes wonderful cookbooks with totally unique recipes. That's one of the things I love about her cookbooks. Also she always includes prep and cooking times and cooking temperatures in celcius, farenheit and gas mark. There's nutritional information for each cake. She includes beautiful pictures and nice introductions for each cake. There's also a Degree of Difficulty.

But the real strength of this book are the unique and delicious recipes. These are just a few of the recipes that you get: Victoria Sandwich Cake,Hayley's Raspberry Cheesecake,Yorkhire Parkin Cake, Peach upside down cake, Chocolate Orange brownies, Honey cake, Black Forest Celebration Gateau, Easy Raspberry Mille-feuilles, Pear and Chocolate cake, Strawberry Swiss Roll, Best of British Battenberg Cake, Banana. Butterscotch and Chocolate Chip Muffins and Gooseberry Friands. Without a doubt the Black Forest Celebration Gateau has my name on it!

Great job!

I love to bake! I'm always looking for that next great recipe.

I'm also teaching my niece to bake, and I got this book so we could go through it together and she could keep it on the computer in the kitchen. What I didn't realize is that while this book has clear and has great directions (the reason I bought it), it also has unusual and tasty cakes!

My niece loves it because she's learning about baking (and she enjoys the photos of what the cake is expected to look like), and I love it because I'm exploring new tastes (coffee and walnut cake).

Some of the things I find delightful about this cookbook include:
- good directions and rating of easy, medium, difficult make it great for a beginning baker
- nutritional information allows me to skim for lower calorie options
- variety of great tasting cakes keeps me coming back.

Well done.

Homemade cakes have always been one of my favourite desserts. This book gives you simple yet delicious cake recipes that you can do at home. Most of them appear to aimed at beginner or novice level bakers, however there is still an element of finesse required in many of the recipes.

There are fruit based, chocolate and coffee type cakes included here and most appear to be completely delicious.

The book also has a nutrition facts box after each cake recipe which is a good reference for the health conscious, although it is a little hard to read (you can resize it just fine). It includes all the standard references.

The tips for the novice baker at the beginning of the book is a big help for those who are just starting their plunge into the world of baking.

Overall, some great recipes and a well done book.

Jenny Collins is an amazing author and her ideas are very helpful. Most of the recipes call for ingredients that are easily attainable by the novice baker. I just started working my way through the recipes and I have to say, the Raspberry Cheesecake recipe is exemplary. I love the idea that the author used her daughter's name for this amazing recipe. Nice personal touch! I tried it last night and I got rave reviews from my family over dinner! I am so excited to try the other recipes from this book. The pictures are also amazing.

The book Make A Cake From Scratch With 31 Homemade Cake Recipes is definitely a must-read. If you're looking for delicious dessert recipes, you need this book. With Jenny's recipe ideas, dinner will never be boring again!
