It really works well--I'm impressed.,

I've fixed hundreds of music CDs and DVDs over the years. Nearly every retail product claiming to do this is a rip-off. Commercial disc fixers cost hundreds and require a good deal of maintenance. I've gotten good results with extremely fine emery papers and Meguiar's PlastX polish. Scratch Out! has a mild abrasive suspended in water, and it works pretty darn well--it's certainly easier to use than emery paper. You really do need to shake well and apply a fairly liberal amount. The "heavy pressure" mentioned on the packaging isn't needed, unless scratches are really, really bad. I found that by using a lighter pressure, long elliptical strokes, and turning the disc as I go works great. You just have to be patient and give it a few minutes. I use soap & water to remove the polish, rather than just wiping dry per the instructions. The fine scratches some folks complain about are normal to polishing and don't impact normal operation. This stuff is so much cheaper than all those mechanical and electric scratch removers--AND IT WORKS BETTER! I highly recommend it.
May, 2010: Let me add that I repair most scratches with Scratch Out! these days, and that I follow up with Meguiar's PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish. I wash the Scratch Out! off with soap and water BEFORE it dries up on the disc. I imagine most people having trouble with the product are following the directions and buffing the dried Scratch Out! off their discs. DON'T DO THAT! Wash it off BEFORE it dries up! After washing and drying the disc, I polish with the Meguiar's PlastX, using the same long elliptical strokes as before. Buff with a clean, dry cloth (really, just a clean scrap of cotton T-shirt). Only the most severe scratches need actual sanding with emery papers. Even then, I finish the job with Scratch Out! and Meguiar's, as emery papers, no matter how fine, seem to leave a cloudy haze on discs.

Disc Destroyer,

I found Scratch Out at Walmart and decided to give it a try and see if it would remove some minor scratches from a PC game CD that would cause occasional pixilation.
I should have taken a pass when the label actually says, "Note: ScratchOut will leave your disc with a light haze, but will restore the disc to fully functional..." What the label doesn't say is that this haze is permanent. After that, the entire disc became unreadable. Three different PCs, on which the game previously played, could not even recognize this disc any more. In retrospect, I wish that the only fault with ScratchOut was that it just doesn't work. At least then, I would still have a playable CD game.

My 2 year daughter has scratched up all her DVDs to where they wouldn't play anymore. So i saw this at Walmart and picked it up to see if I could salvage her DVD's...lo and behold it works! There is a haze but her DVDs play as if they were brand new. Worth the $5!

Bought this product a few days ago. Although i tried different soft cloths with it, the result was exactly the same, a load of swirly scratches over the discs, luckily i didn't pay much for them. I hadn't put much pressure on while using it to mend the origional scratches, so has to be the product. there is a product from england from a company called Bib thats almost the same, just better results, but if i remember rightly was a bit pricy, look for that.

nearly 100% success,
This review is from: Scratch Out CD/DVD Scratch-Repair Fluid (3.5 fl. oz.) (Electronics)
I have used this product SEVERAL times and have had nearly 100% success restoring unplayable dvds. Follow the directions closely and often it needs to be applied more than once. I rubbed until the 'haze' was gone or almost gone. I really love this product.

Lots of rubbing works.,
By And I was scared off because of the previous review. But I couldn't find an alternative scratch remover. I get lots of cds from the public library and they look like someone ice skated on them. I tried ScratchOut on a cd that didn't work anyway and... Nothing. Kept saying "No Disc" But... I rubbed it some more and... It Worked! It did leave a slight haze but who cares? It Played! I was so close to throwing ScratchOut and the cd out. I'm glad I decided to try rubbing just a little more because the cd that had been scratched to death now played flawlessly. p.s. I decided to give the full 5 stars even though it hazed. All I care about is that the disc played. So I will be grateful that ScratchOut saved some extremely rare music on a disc that was trashed.

CD Left worse than before- Not even worth $5,

This stuff sucks. I got it at Walls Mart, and when I got home and opened it up, I realized that the product was returned once already because the safety seal was peeled back. After trying to fix a CD from the library exactly as the instructions said, I had a completely ruined disc. Now I know why the product was returned to Wal-Mart.
The aforementioned 'Haze' in the directions is actually thousands of little abrasions...That's why its permanent. Why would I want MORE scratches in my disc (actually the library's)??? ViaMarket, I bought this stuff to fix my discs...Not destroy them...Thanks for nothing! Don't waste your $5-$6. You don't even get what you pay for on this item.

terrible! do not buy.,
This review is from: Scratch Out CD/DVD Scratch-Repair Fluid (3.5 fl. oz.) (Electronics)
A salescreep at the BestBuy raved about this stuff. He must haven been promo'd to push this junk. I tried it on three disks. All three now have MORE scratches than when I started! I'm going to guess that the 5-star reviews are from people who have an interest in selling this product.
BTW, I've never reviewed an item at Amazon but I was so disappointed by this product (it actually makes things worse!)that I had to chime in.

Works well if you know what you are doing.,

I picked this up for $5.00 at Office Max to fix a Xbox 360 game which was deeply scratched. I Xbox had flipped from the vertical position to the horizontal while I was playing the game which caused deep scratches, needless to say this made the disk unreadable. I was sure the game was gone, in fact I bought a new copy but had second thoughts about throwing the old copy away. I took a chance despite some negative reviews...I'm glad I did now I can give the other copy to my brother. The key of the product seems to be the amount you use and the cloth you use to buff the scratches, if you don't use enough the cloth will scratch the hell out of the disk.

Never has worked once in 3 years,

I bought this 3 years ago to fix a game cd that had minor scratches on it but that wouldn't install. Alas after over an hour of following the directions over and over on the back, the cd didn't work and looked destroyed. A year later the same story several more times. Today I hoped that it could fix another game cd with minor scratches. NOPE
IT'S A SCAM AND A WASTE OF 30 BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
