fun game book, but difficult words for kids, July 16, 2006
This review is from: Scratch & Solve Tough Hangman #1 (Scratch & Solve Series) (Paperback)
I bought this gamebook for my children (ages 6,8,& 10) to keep them busy while traveling this summer. It is a fun and easy to use gamebook that requires only a pencil. However, the hangman words are difficult and inappropriate for young children. I was very surprised to see my daughter finish one of the puzzles resulting in the word "marijuana" and ask me what it means. Other words are difficult for children of these ages as well. ex. Genghis Khan and Saskatchewan. It would have been great if not for some of the words chosen.

Take This Book Out of The Children's Department, January 27, 2010
This review is from: Scratch & Solve Tough Hangman #1 (Scratch & Solve Series) (Paperback)
My family loves games of all shapes and sizes. Finding decent word searches and crosswords for elementary aged children is a struggle. When I discovered these in the Children's Dept of another large retailer - I was so pleased. Until my kids started to do the puzzles. There are no clues or prompts - so the kids feel like failures as they try to figure out the clues. So - to help them, I try to give them clues as they do each puzzle. And there are tough answers like Genghis Khan and Napoleon. But when my 11-year old son asked me for a clue for "m- a- r- i- ? - ? a- n -a" - - I gagged on my latte. You have to be kidding me!! Sure, we have discussed illicit drugs with our kids - but having our 11-year old sort this word out in a Hangman game was unsettling and bizarre. Sadly, this game has been deposited in the trash. I would have given it ZERO stars - but you have to check off at least one.

NO STARS - Do NOT Buy - Unless you want to Prank your Child, January 23, 2010
This review is from: Scratch & Solve Tough Hangman #1 (Scratch & Solve Series) (Paperback)
My 8 year old found this on clearance at Barnes & Noble store in our town. He was excited to get it, and couldn't WAIT to try it out at home.
Sadly, that was the most excited he was about it. The money he earned from his allowance and selling soda and candy was spent on a book that is trash.
I cannot even rate this book on its content because I cannot - even as his parent - scratch off the circles!
My son tried coins, pencils, toenail clippers (pick end), and nothing works well at all; after about 20 minutes of trying to SCRATCH OFF FOUR CIRCLES one of them partially came off; the others ripped through the pages.
Finally, the best thing that worked (I can't say "worked" meaning it really worked; it only scratched off half of two of the dots!) was the back end (metal) of a pencil whose eraser is worn all the way down. Hold it sideways at a cocked angle and gently scratch.
DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK. Spending your money on a piece of garbage out of the trash can is better because at least you wasted your money on something that you have low expectations about.
