4.0 out of 5 stars A Realistic Off Road 4x4, July 3, 2002
By
Nicholas (Springdale, Pennsylvania United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Screamer 4X4 (CD-ROM)
As the game starts you, choose your team this involves picking male or female, thin, muscular, or thick and picking the color of their race suits. Next, you get to pick your vehicle from a choice of 3 but as your progress through the game and win; you get a choice of more vehicles. You pick the vehicles color & engine. Next, you pick the setup of the vehicle with a dozen different settings, which is crucial to the operation of the vehicle. After this step, it is time to race. I hope this little bit helps any of you thinking about this game. It is a fun game but slow paced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Off-Roading SIM!, January 3, 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Screamer 4X4 (CD-ROM)
Screamer 4x4, although very dated by now, is still an extremely fun game for someone looking for a true-to-life off-roading simulation. If you're thinking of buying, please keep in mind that this isn't really a "racing" game; it's much more of a "rock-crawling" game. Yes, your goal is to get through each course as quickly as possible, but it takes a lot of slow, controlled, technical driving to be successful (and to keep your truck in operating condition if you have damage turned on).
Here are the positives about this game:
Graphics are decent (considering its age), and physics are incredibly realistic. Also, by today's standards, any recent computer should be able to run the game easily. The vehicle selection includes some pretty cool ones, although most need to be unlocked. Options for manual transmissions, transfer cases, and manual/automatic/locking hubs allow for a great deal of realism. In addition to the technical courses, there are also sessions that encourage the user to blaze his/her own trail in an open environment.
There are a few negatives:
Sound (engine noise in particular) is absolutely awful, regardless of your vehicle/engine choice. If you have a "spotter" in your vehicle, their comments can be very annoying (though admittedly helpful). Although there are some neat vehicles, it would be nice to have 2 or 3 times as many choices; also, there aren't many color choices on the vehicles.
In summary, if you have the patience and skill to be successful, this game is a great off-road simulation (as opposed to flat-out racers) that leaves you feeling a sense of accomplishment for having succeeded. If you're not into rock-crawling, it may not be for you; if you're a true off-road enthusiast, chances are you'll love it!
