Screamers: Virtuosity beyond belief!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Screamers: Difficult Works For The Horn (Audio CD)
Everything on this cd is terrific, but the Kraft "Evening Voluntaries" is simply not to be believed. The range Cerminaro covers is over four and a half octaves, from the low pedal C to a written high G above C. He plays unearthly chords, lips trills, Glissandos, huge interval leaps and machine-gun staccatos. Honestly, I would have thought this kind of gymnastic virtuosity on a French horn completely impossible if I hadn't heard it for myself.

I was shopping for gift CD's for a sophomore horn playing in our high school wind ensemble; came upon this and three others. Indeed this is difficult music for the horn...and piano too, since I played the piano part for the Schumann work three years ago.
This music is totally fascinating and the horn work is exceptional....smooth, flexible, and absolutely entrancing. It makes me wish I had been able to keep up my own horn playing after college. I was not familiar with Mr. Cerminaro's playing, but I certainly will be looking at his other Horn CD's. |
