3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent moments offset by injection of false emotion
She has an excellent voice, but overuses it in a several songs in an effort to convey "emotion". First half of the album is very strong then both the songwriting and her singing for the remainder of the album declines. Strong underlying talent that needs to refine both her vocal control (she blasts away where sometimes a more subdued approach is required)...

Quite a few years ago, I was watching another boring but "car wreck" appealing version of "Star Search", with the robot-like Ed McMahon, when, onto the stage, slithered a frightened, deranged looking sylph of a girl... who is THIS poor thing??, who proceeded to sing with such force, natural intensity, and skill, that I actually jumped up, we were seeing the birth of the rarest of creatures, a true, 100% STAR. In the proceeding 12 or 13 weeks, she continued to out-do herself in performance, not only with her amazing vocals, which sounded, "live", like most artists could only hope to sound even with all the recording studios bag of tricks, but in the totally un-controlled and un-contrived St. Vitus like contortions of her body which led me to believe that this unbelievably talented girl may actually be possessed while performing. When she fell into a spent heap at the end of each song, each week, you could almost see whatever force inhabited her leave her body...this is not an exaggeration or hindsight...it was real. That, these years later, she is not exactly a household name, does not take away from the respect and awe that those who appreciate her talent feel towards her.I don't know if this recording "Screaming For My Supper", totally captures the power of her phenomenon, but it is a good example of her talent, which I don't think has yet been realized... as far as recording goes, to its full potential. While there are good songs here, and I'd definatley recommend it to familiarize yourself with this artist, it is still, I feel, a case of the artist being better than the material. But, her voice alone makes it worth it. She is a naturally skilled and intuitive singer, who knows best for herself when to hold back, and when to let the monster out. I don't mean to undermine the songs here, "L.A. Song" is wonderfully felt, and "Stay" should be a classic. She is simply such a huge talent, that the expectations may be too high. I honestly don't know if this is her best recorded work, I haven't heard her other efforts yet. After her Star Search appearances, I waited for what I thought was her inevitable huge stardom, but she disappeared for the most part, to relative obscurity. When I happened upon her name in the music store, I was elated, & bought this c.d. immediatley. While I like it & love her, I, again, feel that she has only scratched the surface, and that her best work is to come. And even if that doesn't happen, I will always carry the memory of that rare occurance when I first saw this phenomenal artist.

Ok - Maybe I'm a little obsessed after all, since I know the music of Beth, but I'll try to take an objective look. Beth's voice reminds me of the great Janis Joplin. I was lucky to see her live in Aarhus/denmark and all I can say: Beth has voice - THE voice - even more than you would expect by listening to the CD - and you would expect much - very much. To me the latest single release "L.A.Song" sound unusual for Beth Hart. This is the first time she acts as a distanced storyteller, but it's just another demonstration of her versatility. She's able to do contemporary rock songs, powerfull ballads, blues of highest quality, soul and even jazz elements. She plays rock - no doubt - but you can find all these elements in her music and that gives an unique style to her. And it's not that you would buy a record with good voice but worse compositions - Beth handles songs up to 4 sequences with varied bridging and all classical methods of composing without loosing the thread - there's nothing more you could expect from rock music. So this album is a must for every rockfan. Buy it and if you don't like it - Go to the doctor to let him check your ears.

I bought this CD after only hearing LA Song and was taken aback by how wonderful it is. There really isn't a weak track on it. Beth has a great sound that sets her apart from what is currently dominating music these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delicious Surprise...Can't wait to hear for more, January 21, 2000
This review is from: Screamin for My Supper (Audio CD)
I never heard of Beth Hart until I saw "L.A. Song" on VH1. I went out and bought the CD and think it's the best CD I have listened to in a long time. With all the manufactured teeny bopper acts that are invading the airwaves, I almost forgot how important music is to my life. That is until I bought this CD. If you like bluesy rock that is sung with passion, emotion and power then this is the CD for you.

Take Melissa Ethridge, Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, merge the voices and you've got Beth Hart. I have never heard her on the radio and I didn't see her when she was on Star Search... I discovered her by accident while shopping for a CD Christmas present last year and now think she may be the best female rock-and-roll (with a lot of Blues) voice I've ever heard. And this isn't a great voice that's just never found the right song. Delicious Surprise, LA Song and Hold Me Through the Night (from the CD Immortal) are GREAT songs that just haven't had the play time on the radio for her to be discovered....It's a tragedy and just shows how fickled the music industry is....Wake up world!!!!! This is a great singer that deserves success...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Vocal Talent, June 5, 2001

I bought Screaming for My Supper (used) after reading reviews here. I'd only heard "LA Song," and liked it. I liked Beth's voice; it has a tremor and soul to it that you don't hear much in popular music. At first I thought the album was too rock-infused for my tastes, but after a few days of cautiously playing one track at a time, I couldn't take the CD out of my stereo. I played it at least ten times a day. I'm also a Terence Trent D'Arby fan, and Beth reminds me a lot of him. Her voice can be soft and hard. It's sort of raspy and bluesy and she can really belt it out. Others have likened her to Alanis, but I think Beth has more control over her vocals; even when she's screaming out with seeming abandon, she manages to never go off key.

My favorite tracks are: Mama (so beautiful), Is That Too Much to Ask (a total driving song; you HAVE to sing along - especially if you're a girl), LA Song and Favorite Things. The hidden track after Favorite Things is also pretty awesome; the opening makes me think of Tori Amos. There is also another song on the album with harmonica that reminded me of Blues Traveller. The sound is very clean and professional, but not "poppified." And while her style is at times familiar, her music is pretty original and well-written.

Overall, this is one of my favorite CDs, especially for in the car. The album has a kind of "girl power" feel, yet is still about something. This is music that makes you feel like a real person ... it really gets to the heart of the matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beth Hart - From the Hart, February 10, 2000

For her second album, she did the impossible. It's even better than her first. Anyone who wonders what Janis Joplin would have been like in the 21st Century should defintely give this album a serious listen. She sings from her heart about things we all can relate to. I can't wait for album number three.

Beth Hart is mt favorite singer. Her lyrics really come from her soul. The music is brilliant. Beth Hart was recomended to me by a friend of mine and I am so glad she did so! From the very first time I listened to this CD, I was hooked. Literally not a day goes by that I dont listen to the entire CD at least once. Beth Hart is amazing and I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful!, December 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Screamin for My Supper (Audio CD)
My friend was playing this CD in the car one day, and I insisted on stopping at a record store to buy my own copy. Unfortunately, none of the stores we went to had it! In fact, none of the sales people had even heard of it; so, I went right home and ordered it myself. Beth Hart's voice is so strong and her songwriting so powerful, I get chills when I listen. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who wants something different and non-generic.

I live in the U.K. and music as good as this is very hard to find, we are fed on a diet of boy bands and manufactured pop acts devoid of talent and musical ability. It is great therefore to hear artists who literally have the power to move and inspire you. Beth Hart on Screamin for my Supper does just that! This woman possesses an amazing voice that just stuns the listener... She deserves great success with this brilliant record...! It would be great to see Beth become a big hit in countries like the U.K. but unfortunately I think she is too talented musically to succeed here.
