5.0 out of 5 stars "Torsos" need I say more?, June 15, 2005
This review is from: Screaming Headless Torsos (Audio CD)
This band is an awesome fusion of rock soul jazz rap and of course funkystuff. The distortion is cool the vocals are sweet the packaging is unmatched. My Favorite song is 'Smile in a Wave'! Fuze is awesome!
I would also reccomend George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Avant-Garde funk with a bit of everything, June 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Screaming Headless Torsos (Audio CD)
Big energy from the N.Y. scene. A mix of funky grooves with a little bit of everything, going from jazz to rock, from intriguing atmosferic guitars to fiery polirithmic patterns. Excellent guitar solos from one of the most interesting guitar players of the moment, not the typical lick-based solo but a real expressive, rythmically dense and spontaneous one with an incredible harmonic sense for the rythm parts. Very creative bass and drum lines perfectly executed not only in a technical, mechanical way but also as long as expressiveness is concerned, helped by the touch of a percussionist that brings a breath of fresh a ir into the rythm section, and into today's music itself. Incredible lead vocals offering all the demanding power and energy this record requires, covering with astonishing ease all ranges and registers with an unusual dramatic sense from jazz almost-be-bop-lines to rap, from a soulish ballad to a fiery funk-rock melody. Great recording and mastering, as you would expect from the one of the best N.Y studios. I have to recognize it wont fit everyone's taste but its a 'must have record' for someone who wants to be surprised with new, dense, and interesting musical experiences.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amazing stuff, in that special jazz fusiony way, August 26, 2004

A used record store acquaintance sidled over and said I saw Hendrix live: they're better. Went to go see them. Loved the show and like the album.

The Screaming Headless Torsos debut (the worst band name ever? they're in the running) is a heck of a lot of fun. Modal guitar twinkies, noodling vocal scat, deep funk vibes with crushing rock riffage coming in sideways. All with extra bongos.

It's the tweedle-tweedle vocal trick that slaps me out of things. It's one great trick, don't get me wrong, but it is the same trick. Over and over. The guitar heroics can also be fatiguing. Perhaps this is the definition of a jazz fusion album: amazing skills but ultimately frustrating.
