Book Description

Can love be found in the arms of a kidnapper?

Running away from a complicated life, Raleigh finds herself plunged into a nightmare. While hitchhiking across the country, she and her companion are struck by a car. Her friend is killed but Raleigh survives and her life is thrown into the hands of the three men involved in the accident. Bruised and in shock, Raleigh is locked in the basement of their remote country house, unsure of her fate.

Kaden, one of her captors, is handsome and at times protective, and he convinces his friends to spare Raleigh’s life to ransom her. But the safety he provides is only from his friends, and Raleigh must face his sinister intentions. Agreeing to become his lover in return for continued protection, she begins to see a tender and caring side of Kaden despite their short but violent history. As the ransom payment begins to unravel and Raleigh's life hangs in the balance, she wonders how much she can trust Kaden. Are the feelings she has developed for him genuine or a result of her situation? Does he truly care for her, as he claims, or does he just see her as a ransom payment?

Screaming in the Silence is the harrowing, provocative story of a woman testing love in the most hostile of environments. It is a story you will never forget. Now, with a new, never-before read Epilogue, Screaming in the Silence is the official published version of the Internet hit that has been read hundreds of thousands of times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feel very morally conflicted September 17, 2011
[NOTE: The book blurb is horrible, misleading, and does more harm than good. The story is much more complex than it implies. I think the only reason that I was able to like this book is because the author does not let anyone off the hook, nor does she try to convince us to do so. The rape is rape; that is not forgotten at any point.]

Honestly, I'm not sure what to write. I stumbled across this book by accident, read the summary, and was horrified. From what I briefly saw of other people's Goodreads reviews, they were as well. How could one not be?

I do think that SCREAMING IN THE SILENCE suffers from having a summary that doesn't really do its story justice, but casts it in the worst possible light. I don't want to give anything away, because this is such a psychological suspense, so I will try to write what I can about the plot and characters without disclosing things I wouldn't have wanted to know beforehand.

As I was reading it - and finding myself unwillingly captivated by the story - I decided that even if I did end up really liking the book, I wouldn't rate it or review it, because I would be far too embarrassed and ashamed (sincerely, no offense meant to the author). I've worked with and have friends who are survivors of sexual assault and rape, so before I even started it the book felt so ... wrong, just completely 100% wrong! It felt wrong that I wanted to read it in the first place.

In my opinion, this doesn't qualify as romance in the sense that it's not a Contemporary Romance solely for romance-romance readers. It will satisfy them (us), yes, but in my mind it is very much a "mainstream" book. It's also NOT erotica, which I want to make very clear. I was very relieved by this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Insightful and unexpected! May 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is my first review on amazon, although I am an avid reader, I felt compelled to write this one because I was absolutely amazed how insightful and original the story was. The author was really brave to broach the subject of rape in a love story, and I admire her honest portrayal of Raleigh's emotional state. For those reading this review who may have objections to the subject matter, I say, read with caution if you already know that this is an upsetting topic for you. However those who may seek out such topics to begin with, I hope you find the deep, kindred connection with Raleigh as I did. My only criticism, and this is not towards the author, is the editing (since the book was supposedly edited by a publisher) and there are more than a few simple editing errors. However I could not penalize the book for this, and gave it all 5 stars. I look forward to more brilliant writing from Lydia Kelly. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rape / Love / Stockholm syndrome May 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Warning: there is rape in this book. If you don't want to read about forced sexual encounters, do not read this book. I found "Screaming in Silence" to be very well written. Violence, deception, stockholm syndrome, rape - not for the faint of heart. Great character development. The book made me wonder what if Raleigh and Kayden had met under different circumstances would they have found true love. This book was suspenseful, very emotional and also intriguing. It was really hard to put down because I kept wanting to see what was going to happen next.

"But the second I saw you, I didn't see how scared you were, I didn't see how much pain you were in, I just saw something I needed."

Screaming in the Silence opens up with Raleigh Winters, and recent PhD graduate waking up after been struck by a car. Three men debate her destiny and Kaden convinces his friends that they should ransom her. The fact that Raleigh is deaf puts her at a disadvantage. Add to that she is the daughter of an US Senator.

Soon she develops conflicting feelings for Kaden, on one hand she is intrigued and finds herself falling for him, but he also frightens her. There is violence and rape which only complicates matters. Despite the fact that Kaden and Raleigh have developed feelings for each other they are aware and struggle with the fact that Raleigh is held hostage. There really is no immediate future for them except on the run.

In the end they don't get to make that decision together instead the story takes a turn... one I did not expect!

HERO: Kaden Prideaux/31 years/Translator/French-Algerian-American/black hair/green eyes.
Six words to describe Kaden Prideaux: Conflicted, intelligent, loyal, selfish, caring and endearing.
"I'm not a bad person, Raleigh. I've just done some f~ k~d up things lately."

HEROINE: Raleigh Anne Winters/26 years/recent graduate, PhD Political Science & Economics/US Senator's daughter/blond hair/gray eyes/deaf.
Six words to describe Raleigh Anne Winters: Captivating, sweet, smart, lovable, strong and evolving.
"I hated this. I hated that I wanted him. I hated that what he was doing was driving me insane."

Intriguing and thought provoking plot! Bittersweet and emotional story! Captivating characters! Masterfully told!

2.0 out of 5 stars This story has gotten on my last nerve. July 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just a warning, this does have some spoilers in it.

This book gets on my nerves. Currently I am on Chapter 19, and each further page is a chore to keep reading. The writing is equivalent to Twilight, the character complications are ridiculous, and the plot is complex in a way that insults my intelligence.

I hate the main character. This is a woman who is supposedly struck by stockholm syndrome, battling with her feelings of love and fear of her captor. She constantly talks about how she loves the power he has over her, and his strength as her protector is why she falls in love with him. First off, I should point out that I was one of those people who rolled their eyes at Romeo and Juliet falling love after mere hours. This story is similar in that the "heroine" automatically falls for Kaden's "intense green eyes" and immediately feels some semblance of trust in him. Even after he doesn't talk to her for weeks, lets her practically starve to death, and rapes her, she still develops feelings of love for him. He's controlling, egocentric, and bipolar! Here is my biggest peeve with this book: Raleigh (said heroine)is supposed to be this well-educated woman (with a PhD)who has overcome a huge disability, realized that her PhD was not the life she wanted, and decided to hitch-hike across the country by herself. That description does NOT match the actions of the girl in this book; yes, I said girl, because these are not the actions of a strong independent woman. EVERYTHING Kaden tells her to do, she does. She has no willpower, no backbone, and no sense of morality. Yes, Kaden does confess that he had a case of "love at first sight" with her, but he also is responsible for the death of her friend. And what does he do? He throws her friend's body into the ocean.
