5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal, Scary, Apocalypitic Death Metal, August 18, 2003
This review is from: Screams of Anguish (Audio CD)
Have you ever wondered what the end of the world would be like? Well, just crank this album on and prepare to be destroyed or better yet, crushed. This album is a classic and personal favorite of mine. It holds an extremely important place in my list of greatest death metal albums of all time. This is the album that made me a fan of this band and to tell you the honest truth, I have never been the same after hearing it nor do I ever regret buying it. It's just one of those albums that will make you apprecriate death metal in one form or another. So, the best way I could discribe this album is extravagently intense, catastrophic, cataclysmic, apocalyptic, thunderous, devastating, annihilating, scary, technical yet totally brutal death metal at its ultimate best. The vocals are pretty scary, the bass is thunderous, the guitars are melodic yet intense and the drums sound almost like an earthquake. There is also 2 incredable instrimentals. The first is called Sympathy which can be discribed as something from a Conan or a Barbarian movie because it's comprised of classical music. The second one is called Spirit World which could be looked upon as sort of new age song because it really sounds like a peaceful journey through the spiritual realm of eternity. Some of my favorite songs here are These Walls Shell Be Your Grave, Ceremonial Unearthing, Crushed, Cries Of The Forsaken, Cryptorium and Spawned Illusion which is my most favorite. So, with everything I've said, buy this album and be prepared for annihilation. You've been warned.

If you like your death metal technical and old school this is great album to start with -solid riffing and drumming, can't really hear the bass per se. This is their first album and definately worth checking out.

Screams of Anguish has awesome riffs and flowing double bass that is ultra fast. The instrumentals are very melodic and will make you want to go adventuring!! Wicked stuff of high METAL caliber. NOT FOR THE TRENDY!

4.0 out of 5 stars When death was real, December 28, 2010

Whack this slab in your player and discover real Death metal, not this suedo garbage that exists today. These guys were around when all the classic Death Metal bands were coming up with basically a top class album every week between the lot of them. Those days are sadly long gone, but at least we've got their releases to bring us back there, even if its just in your mind.
Mean nasty tremelo picked riffs, backed up by more than adequate drumming, hammered by double vocals, not to mention a good bass sound with thoughtful licks and runs. This is another title that I can personally thank Amazon for allowing me to obtain it, being that no record store would ever stock something so overlooked. There was only one track that didn't seem to fit to me, something with keyboards and dreamy soundscape. Everything else lives up to the name BRUTALITY, you can't say that they falsely advertise. Thanks lads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Landmark Technical Death Metal, November 29, 2010
This review is from: Screams of Anguish (Audio CD)
Amongst the multiple bands to emerge out of the death metal scene arising from the area, Brutality have managed to be one of the most unsung and overlooked. This is a shame, as their 1993 debut full-length, "Screams of Anguish", is a masterpiece in its league.

First off, while this is considered a technical death metal album, it's not what you would expect from Atheist, later Death and their ilk. In this case, Brutality manage to utilize more death metal oriented song structures that are highly complex and consist of multiple moods, blending in perfectly to represent the strong songwriters they are. Nearly every song manages to capture the same atmosphere, but it's not one of those "every song sounds the same and the whole album blends in and gets boring". Absolutely not, because each song represents its own throughout their distinguishable guitar tone and phenomenal musicianship. The two interludes manage to give it some space to breathe, but in no way are they filler. In fact "Sympathy" is a beautifully melancholic classical style piece that bridges the gap perfectly, as well as the approach on "Spirit World".

The Metal Mind limited reissue not only has the album remastered on a gold disc, but we get the inclusion of the bonus track "Sadistic", which originally appeared on the Sadistic 7" EP released a year before. Do what it takes to get your hands on this, as this is a milestone in death metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars classic tampa death metal, September 8, 2008

This review is from: Screams of Anguish (Audio CD)
brutality was an underated band from tampa this is by far their best album although when the sky turns black is great also this one came out in 93 and featured original guitartist jay ferendez who left after this album and was replaced by bryan hipp every song is heavy and scott reigiel does a great job on vocals the third song is an instrumental with keyboards I know most death metal fans hate the keyboards but it's nice to break it up and just chill on a song and plus you can tell it was definetly classical infuenced anyway the remastered version is great with a bonus song they only made three albums than broke up but what a three years it was great pick up for classic death metal
