From the Manufacturer

Why You Need a Screen: "Can I just use a plain white wall?"

To enjoy the very best image from your projector you need controlled texture, controlled color, and controlled gain. Projection screens have optical coatings that enhance their reflective properties; white walls don't. You can certainly use a wall if you want to, and you may get a watchable image. However, compared to the image you get with a proper screen, highlights will not be as brilliant, contrast and color saturation will be reduced, and (depending largely on the texture of the wall) sharpness will be decreased as well. You may end up with an image that is not as good as your projector is capable of delivering.

Furthermore, one very important but often ignored benefit of a screen is not actually the screen, but the frame. A solid black frame around a video image substantially boosts the visual quality of the image itself. So unless you paint a black rectangle on your wall, by foregoing the screen you will lose this vital component in the overall visual experience.

The frame makes the difference. An outer black velvet frame absorbs the projector's light, while a standard painted frame reflects the projector's light back into your eyes causing distraction.

Why You Need a 1.1 Gain

Gain is a measure of the reflectivity of the screen's surface. The higher the gain is, the brighter the image. A gain of 1.0 means that the screen reflects back the same amount of light that the screen projection standard (a homogenously reflective block of magnesium carbonate) can reflect. A gain of 1.5 means that the screen reflects 50% more light than the screen standard. Having a high gain screen is a mixed blessing; the image may be brighter, but since the viewing angle usually decreases inversely to the gain, a bright screen may be more of a sacrifice than a pleasure. If your room is completely dark, too much gain can cause eyestrain or fatigue. The goal is to have the perfect balance of brightness which is achieved with a 1.1 gain utilizing today projectors in a dark environment.

Screen Innovations' Matte White 1.1 Gain screen material is widely used with most projectors today. The flexible PVC based material is one of the most popular screen materials used in a dark theater environments and provides a wide viewing angle, high contrast, bright picture and excellent color temperature.

Note: If you want to show off your screen without turning on the projector use the IR remote.

I was worried about my purchase but overall I have no regrets. I had a professional put it together for me during my home theater setup so I am not sure if it would have been easy for me (being quite handy). We have been enjoying lot of movies on this screen and have had it for about 1.5years now it has been doing well so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Screen, December 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this 100" screen from Amazon, after reading multiple reviews about projection screens, and seeing a Screen Innovations screen at a local store. It was beautifully packed and delivered on time. The assembly itself was relatively simple - the four aluminium frames lined with black velvet aligned prefectly, and could be screw tighetened easily. The snap pins were already in place, and the screen was again very well sub-packed (they even include a pair of gloves!). The only part I found tough was snapping the screen over the snap pins. The screen has to be really STRETCHED to make it to the snap pins, and I was worried about tearing it, with the amount of pulling required. It took me about 30 mins from unboxing it to reading instructions and assembling the frame. It took another about 1 hour to snap on the screen to the snap pins. Once done, the finished screen looked really beautiful with 2 inch black velvet lined screen.

Movies project very well and the viewing experience is superb. One caveat is that I needed to reduce ambient light for the contrasts to appear sharp. Once this was done, the colors, contrast and overall movie watching experience was excellent, and it did feel like being in a movie theater. My suggestion to Screen Innovations is to have a more detailed isntruction sheet with more information in it, or a link to a website about screen assembly. Final word - it is a beautiful screen and I give it an A+.
