Indispensible work for film buffs,

This review is from: Screening Modernism: European Art Cinema, 1950-1980 (Cinema and Modernity) (Paperback)
Kovacs Andras Balint is a renowned film critc in his homeland. MOdernism in art cinema is his expertise. We can see the fruits of the sophisticated knowledge he amassed throughout his career. Personally, I liked how he paints a thorough background introduction in terminology and cinematography. Besides this, the author provides thorough analysis of major trends, directors and movies. He chose a very influential period to dissect: these years were the formative years of movie making and evergreen films were made. Kovacs Andras Balint's work, in scope and thoroughness, lives up to the importance of his subject matter. He deals with the different trends by comparing and contrasting them.
I can mention only one point I think the book lacks (and a couple of other reviews mention this): the author could have made a deeper explanation (compare and contrast) of the trend that followed modernism: postmodernism in movie making. I would love to read a book on postmodernism by Kovacs Andras Balint! |
