5.0 out of 5 stars Mark is the best!!
I'll never forget the day, in 1977, when I first heard "sultans of swing" from Dire Straits. I was totally fascinated with the guitar licks. In my opinion, Mark is the best in the business.

I've watched him grow over the years, and he's only gotten better. Anyone who loves this work must own "Golden Heart". You may no longer hear Mark's music on "Popular stations"...

3.0 out of 5 stars Review of Mark Knopfler's 'Screenplaying'
This has some great stuff, but just about all of it is in the beginning of the disc from the movie 'CAL'. There are some other good tunes, but too few and too far apart on the disc. All of it is nice to listen to, I was hoping for more upbeat material or in lieu of that, more tunes like those from 'Cal'. That stuff is great.

That's because these days, it's about the MTV thing. Look is more important than talent. But hey, Mark was the first to tell you that with "Money for Nothing". Enrich your life. Purchase this CD, or the individual CDs. Either way, you're going to love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knopfler Goes Gaelic and Classical, March 7, 2006
This review is from: Screenplaying (Audio CD)
This CD consists of musical selections from the soundtracks of "Cal, Last Exit to Brooklyn, The Princess Bride," and "Local Hero" by Mark Knopfler finger-picking rock guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, best known as the front man for Dire Straits.

"Cal" and "Local Hero" feature Celtic influenced music; "Princess Bride" is lilting and classical; "Last Exit" features melancholy violins. The best known tune on the CD is the "Local Hero" theme, "Going Home," which Knopfler used to play in his live shows. The outstanding feature of the CD is Knopler's guitar playing which as always is complex and tuneful.

If the CD lacks anything it is majesty -- but none of these films was majestic, so Knopfler can be forgiven for not writing an ear-thumping "Lord of the Rings"-type theme. My wife calls a couple of the pieces drippy, but most are very good, a few beautiful, and all good, easy listening.

If the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the words "Mark Knopfler" is "Money for Nothing", you probably won't like this one. But if you want to hear a pure MASTERPIECE, buy it now, then put this CD on and sit back and prepare for pure total sensory pleasurement beyond your wildest imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the most moving music I've ever heard, December 11, 2001

I guess you could say this music and my husband found me at the same time. I swear, when he played it for me, I thought this must be the most sensitive wonderful man alive. Two years later, we're listening to it while ordering music from amazon. If you ever feel like a good cry listen to cuts 8 and 9; some of the most beautiful music ever written. Highly recommended. Ignore the rantings of gearheads who expect Knopfler to be some "Money for Nothing" rock star. He is a brilliant, talented and versatile musician and songwriter. Not friggin' Alice Cooper. Relax and listen with your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Local Hero plus plus, September 27, 2002

I have always loved Local Hero the movie and Local Hero - Going Home theme from Dire Straits Live album. This collection is really great, it reminded me of all the rest of the fab music from that movie and introduced me to the other wonderful music specially from Cal.

Knopfler greatness comes across so well in this collection as a true of master classical and symphonic rock, the Galic connection makes his music dreamy and wonderful, enjoy!

I read listeners reviews on this CD and went out and purchased. What an incredible sound. I listen to Pink Floyd to Sarah Brightman and this is now one of my favorites . Everyone who listens to it , of all ages , wants it. Thanks to those who reviewed before me.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my faves, May 23, 2001

I can't believe the reviewer, below, who calls this a snoozer. It's one of my favourite MK recordings. I also strongly recommend all of the movies from which these songs come -- Local Hero, Cal, and Last Exit -- all moving, in their own ways, and beautifully captured by the music provided by MK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always brings compliments!, October 3, 2001

I bought this CD over four years ago, shortly after hearing it at a dinner party. Not only does it personally remind me of a great time, but it has time and again soothed my frazzled nerves after a day at work and fighting traffic. It contains a variety of music styles (Celtic to Classical to Jazz); sure to please many tastes. It has become one of my few all time favorites. I keep hoping for a sequal.

5.0 out of 5 stars An another great compilation of MK. Really a perfect idea., May 27, 1999

This review is from: Screenplaying (Audio CD)
This album has a very nice and little bit funny pocket-frontside, well not SO funny but a little bit. It's a genius idea to have people going in to the cinema to see sounddtrack movies . Anyway ,the tracks here on this album is brilliant , all of them. MK and c.o...choosed the best songs ,i think. Too bad that there was'nt anymore tracks from the"Last exit to Brooklyn"-album. but that does not do any matter, it's good anyway. The pictures at MK himself is typicall him ,and i like that photos. "Going Home" is one of the great favourites i've got here, a terrific ending at the album. "Wild Theme" is also good. But i miss some Live -perf. here. The name screenplaying is a really good name too. faster songs and slower songs, everybody is great. /J.L
