Editorial Reviews

Uniting 16 film and television writers in a richly entertaining and often surprisingly revealing "doculogue," director Michael Steven Gregory's award-winning WE, THE SCREENWRITER explores the personality, process and profession of being a scribe in today's Hollywood.

Spanning the gamut of genres with credits including AIR BUD, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, CARNIVÀLE, CLEOPATRA, CONSTANTINE, HILL STREET BLUES, HOUSE, KISS, KISS, BANG, BANG, THE LAST BOY SCOUT, LETHAL WEAPON, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: 2, MOBY DICK, PACIFIC HEIGHTS, PERFECT ROMANCE, RESURRECTING THE CHAMP, ROSWELL, THE ROLE OF A LIFETIME, SILVER SURFER, SPAWN, SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, THE SUM OF ALL FEARS, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, TIMELINE, WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS and more, those appearing in the film offer a uniquely insider's perspective rife with practical information.

Among the array of topics addressed: whether or not to "write what you know," the impact of screenwriting on personal relationships, spec vs. assignment writing, determining the final draft, the distinctions between film and television writing, whom to trust for criticism, the screenwriter's responsibilities, adaptation, rewriting, writing for market, outlining, what agents really do, dealing with studio notes, genre-writing, ageism, whether or not talent is necessary to succeed, which page is most important, who to write for and why, authorial voice, pitching, constructing story, young executives, identity & validation, and even whether screenwriting is a cult.

For screenwriters, or anybody interested in making movies, WE, THE SCREENWRITER provides a densely informative, fast-paced journey into the art, craft and business of writing for the screen.

This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great films: It's all about the Screenwriter, stupid!, January 28, 2010

This review is from: We, The Screenwriter (DVD)
As these wondrous writers in "We, the Screenwriter" tell their individual stories, it becomes clear that they share a certain hard-to-describe something that allows them, each in their own way, to reach deep into their gut and pull out their imperfect mortal failings and use them to massage their scripts into works of ingenious power and depth. World-class screenwriters open their notebooks, their minds and their very souls and those of us lucky enough to watch them on this DVD benefit tremendously.

The staging and editing reaches a perfection seldom seen in the world of documentary story-telling, and like his previous work sets Gregory on a pedestal that others should try to reach.

If you write, anything, or just know a writer, or would like to know a writer - don't miss this outstanding documentary film!
