5.0 out of 5 stars The Practical Guide and so much more
As far as practical guides to screenwriting go, this is one of the best. It's a guide to laying out your story, on how best to present your story as a structured piece of screenwriting.

But it's also so much more than that. When you really discover the storytelling gears driving the practical instructions in this book, your writing won't look back...

Granted, I was foolish enough to part with $97 for Phil Gladwin's "special package" of screenwriting know-how when it was a pre-Amazon online special. That's right - ninety seven dollars U.S.

Now that it's available on Amazon, I have a platform to warn others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down, best in the field. A screenwriter's Bible., February 8, 2010

This review is from: Screenwriting Goldmine: How to Write a Screenplay That People Are Desperate to Shoot! (Paperback)
This is by far the best DIY book I have ever read. Not only the best "how to write a script" book, but the best How-To book period. Phil gets straight to the point and lays it out in step by step, simple format. Cannot go wrong.

Granted, I was foolish enough to part with $97 for Phil Gladwin's "special package" of screenwriting know-how when it was a pre-Amazon online special. That's right - ninety seven dollars U.S.

Now that it's available on Amazon, I have a platform to warn others.

What did I get for $97? A glorified package of brochures containing recycled content that can be obtained from any number of other books on the subject, most of which are available for less than $20. Even at $35 MSRP here on Amazon, this 100 page "book" is WAY overpriced. If I could give it zero stars, I would.

If you really want to spend that much on a single book, look up "Inside Story" by Dara Marks. You won't regret it. If you feel that $35 is a lot to spend on a one book (in this economy, who can blame you?), look up titles by Blake Snyder, Denny Martin Flinn, Christopher Keane, Michael Hague, Billy Mernit, Jeff Kitchen, Christopher Vogler, Karl Iglesias, Lajos Egri, Paul Chitlik, or William Akers. Even Syd Field or Robert McKee would be money better spent.

Who knows - you might even get two books for the price of this one.

I bought this book, The Screenwriter's Bible and Screenwriting for Dummies and have read them all. The book I keep coming back to is How to Write a Screenplay That People Are Desperate to Shoot. It has all the information I need to stay focused and positive about my future as a screenwriter.

I've written two screenplays since I read this book, and I've had two producer requests for one of them, one producer request for the other, and a producer request based on a seven-word logline for a scenario that's not yet even a script! Stuff like this has never happened to me before. Plus one of the above screenplays was a finalist in this year's New York-based Bridge International Screenplay Competition. Let me say that again: Stuff like this has never happened to me before. Get it, read it, and do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect...., January 29, 2011
This review is from: Screenwriting Goldmine: How to Write a Screenplay That People Are Desperate to Shoot! (Paperback)
I think this may be the best "How to..." screenwriting book I've ever read - clear, concise and full of straightforward advice. The balance of practical/theoretical advice is perfect. As far as I'm concerned the price is a tiny investment in what I hope will be a glittering future! I can't recommend it highly enough. Thank you Phil!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, September 25, 2010

I only gave it 4 stars because im only on chapter 5, but I will more than likely come back and give it 5 stars, because this book is ace! It's really good and extremely helpful for someone like me, who has never written a story outside of school homework in the past. I've always wanted to write down the endless stories I've had floating around in my head since I was a child, but I never really had clear structure on how to do it. This guy won't let you down on how to write a screen play, and the cool thing about the book is that it's like a workbook, and it takes 1-3 days in most cases to get started on each chapter in the book. That's why the book is only like 90 pages. I know some people are complaining about the price, and I was pretty shocked myself at how much it was, but it's worth it, I don't care what people say, because it has completely helped me. But everyone's different I know, and what helps me might not help others, so I understand if your cautious.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Inspiring!, February 3, 2010

This review is from: Screenwriting Goldmine: How to Write a Screenplay That People Are Desperate to Shoot! (Paperback)
Screewriting Goldmine is filled with a lot of insightful and inspiring bits to help you get started writing your scripts. I first heard about Phil Gladwin's texts via the internet and was intrigued, but there wasn't enough to make me want to buy, well not until a friend of mine let me use a copy of their book. I was instantly inspired and wanted the book as a reference.

The book is a quick read, but within these short 100 pages is a clear understanding on how to structure and write good screenplays. I really enjoyed the nugget about making a beat breakdown sheet containing a sentece that can later be expanded into a scene. How easy is it to write down the heart of your scene in a sentence then go away and visualize every moment of that scene coming to life.

Writing is hard and takes a lot of time to master, but if you have a passion for telling stories that you want to see, you can not go wrong with using Mr. Gladwin's book as a guide and or reference to draft the films you want to write.
