From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-Simple explanations presented in large-print, easy-to-read texts. Screws begins with a discussion of how these simple machines work. The rest of the book examines the different types of screws and how they are used in the world around us-in jar lids, nuts and bolts, drills and borers, and aircraft propellers. The variety and multitude of uses of coiled pieces of metal are explored in Springs. The text explains what they are and how they function in beds, doors, umbrellas, pens, scales, etc. In both books, the appealing layouts include at least one color photograph, diagram, or drawing per page. The pictures depict a multiethnic cast of children and adults engaged in a variety of activities. Shaded boxes provide bold-print captions to the illustrations or questions for readers to consider. Answers are located at the back of the book. Screws contains instructions for making a pinwheel and Springs, directions for making a jack-in-the-box. Clear introductions to very specific topics.
