Book Description

July 30, 2006
The first American Jewish anthology in a decade to include both established masters and the newest generation of gifted storytellers.

The authors gathered here represent contemporary American Jewish fiction at its best. Drawn from the renowned rooftop reading series at Ansche Chesed, a synagogue on the Upper West Side in New York City, Scribblers on the Roof brings together revered masters, such as Cynthia Ozick, Lore Segal, and Max Apple, with gifted newcomers, including Pearl Abraham, Jon Papernick, and Dara Horn. Whether set in New York, Jerusalem, Moscow, or in Paradise, their stories—funny, tragic, sensuous, surprising—sparkle with originality, vitality, and chutzpah.

Among the other contributors are Jonathan Ames, Myra Goldberg, Ken Kalfus, Binnie Kirshenbaum, Jonathan Levi, Mary Morris, Sonia Pilcer, Jonathan Rosen, Norma Rosen, Lucy Rosenthal, Lynne Sharon Schwartz, Steve Stern, and Aryeh Lev Stollman.

This review is from: Scribblers on the Roof: Contemporary Jewish Fiction (Paperback)
Scribblers On The Roof: Contemporary American Jewish Fiction by Co-authors Melvin Jules Bukiet & David G. Roskies is an anthology of modern short stories by American Jewish writers, all drawn from the successful "rooftop reading" series of New York City's Congregation Ansche Chesed. Blending stoicism, comedy, and bittersweet tragedy, these short tales offer a glimpse of the human condition, and range in setting from the mundanity of daily life to the workings of a divine bar in Paradise. Each brief tale has its own delicious slant in perspective, and all are highly recommended.
