One of Micheal's best,
By Arden "Arden" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scribbling in Sand: Best of Michael Card - Live (Audio CD)
I am a longtime fan of Michael Card's music. I love his voice, and he and his music sound better live than prerecorded. I have seen him in concert 4-5 times and have had the opportunity to meet him. If you have not had the chance to see/hear him live, then this CD is a close second to being able to do that. A nice thing about the CD is that his comments are at the end of each track, so you can just skip forward to the next song if you don't want to hear the talking each time you play the CD.Some of Michael's best songs are on this CD. Many of them feature a guest vocalist or musician, which you may or may not enjoy. I personally love the album. The only thing that disappointed me was the fact that he didn't introduce one of the guest vocalists, Sarah Groves. Perhaps he didn't do this because, as he said live at a concert, she needs no introduction. It's great to hear her awesome voice on a couple of the songs!

This Michael Card CD, like almost all CDs with his name on them is well worth the cash! The reasons why after more than 20 years of singing, song-writing, and touring he has waited until now to release a concert album is anyone's guess. But he couldn't have done better (unless "Come To the Table" had been included). I own all of Michael Card's music that is available on CD, but this was the first time I had ever heard his regular talking voice. When he speaks, it's not with the voice of a great speaker or a musical genius (although he is certainly that). When he addresses the audience, he does so in a way that not only do you, the listener, feel like you're a member of that audience, but that you're the only member. It feels like it's just you and him and the Lord. That's one of many things that make this CD so great to listen to.The other great thing is, of course, the music itself. He starts out with his timeless classic "El Shaddai", singing it in a slightly different way than normal, but still beautifully enough to appreciate this version as well as the original. Other really great Card classics on here include "Why", "God's Own Fool", "The Sunrise of Your Smile", and my all-time personal favorite "Love Crucified Arose". Most of the songs feature a beautiful piano accompaniment. We're also given two never-before released songs entitled "Scribbling In the Sand" and "Underneath the Door", before which Michael Card shares a wonderful personal story from his own childhood about how he came up with the idea for that particular song. Now that I know just how great a Michael Card concert is, I can't wait to see one!

Classic Card,

This review is from: Scribbling in Sand: Best of Michael Card - Live (Audio CD)
This CD is a compilation of songs performed by this very talented artist throughout his career. There is something about the music of Micahel Card that makes his music stand heads-above other Christian artists. His lyrics are truly anointed and inspired, showing forth a deep understanding and revelation that Mr. Card has of the Mystery of Christ. His music is not "show-bizzy," like other "Christian" artists are. Obviously, Michael Card is not singing for fame and fortune, he is singing and writing to give glory to the L-RD. This CD is very edifying and makes an excellent addition to any library of Christian music.

A Great Michael Card album!,

This review is from: Scribbling in Sand: Best of Michael Card - Live (Audio CD)
I've seen Michael a couple of times in concert, so when I saw this budget priced live album in the stores, I bought it without hesitation. I still play it frequently three years later. Michael dusts off some of his older songs ("Love Crucified Arose," "Know You in the Now," "El Shaddai"), and what I love about this album is that the live versions top the studio versions in almost every instance. "God's Own Fool" in particular is a revelation: Michael sung it WAY too high on the Scandalon album, but here it is sung just right with some nice African sounding drums in the background - perfect!!!
The aforementioned oldies that Michael plays here on piano are also superior to the originals, and there is also a nice song that he dedicates to his family ("Sunrise of your Smile"). This is a must buy if you are Michael Card fan, and it is a good first purchase if you have never heard him before. My only complaint is "What is up with the crowd, they are SO quiet!" The song ends, and there is a two second pause before you hear some nice quiet clapping. What are those people on? If I was there listening to a live rendition of "Love Crucified Arose," I would be shouting "YEAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!" Otherwise, this is simply a great cd!

I have many of Card's tapes from his early years. This is the first time I have bought one of his cds and I am amazed at how awesome he has remained over the years. Scribblings in the Sand is a very touching song and I highly recommend the cd to anyone. The old favorites on the cd differ from their original recordings but lack nothing for entertainment and a drawing close to God.

I'm fairly conservative in my musical taste. A couple of these songs are a little "bouncy" for me, but overall, it's a great cd. Michael Card has such depth in his lyrics and beautiful music to accompany it and this is no disappointment. You Tube has most if not all of these songs posted, so it's nice if you want to check it out further before purchasing. I would say if your musical taste is as mine, you'll want to buy it as soon as you see it! :)

One of the Best CD's I've owned,

It's true the best things are surprises. I saw this CD at the Bible store for a few dollars on the clearance shelf and decided I'd check it out. This was my first exposure to Michael Card, and it was a pleasant surprise. Probably one of the best CD's I've ever owned. This is the music that I go to listen to when I get tired of all my other music. It is truly beautiful and inspirational. His "Best Of" CD doesn't even compare.

Michael Card has some of the very best Lyrics ever written. This also has some very great musicianship. This is a very best of CD but all the songs are recorded live. It has some guest appereances by Steve Green and Phil Keaggy. A great intro to his music and his songwriting. I really like the songs "El Shaddai" "Immanuel" and "Underneath the Door." The only problem is I just cant get into the Card's vocals for some reason the just dont do anything for me.

A Wonderful Evening,
By
This review is from: Scribbling in Sand: Best of Michael Card - Live (Audio CD)
While the CD of this performance is excellent, the reader will be much more pleased with the DVD of this live evening with Michael Card and those friends, family and musicians closest to him. In the performance you get a deep sense of the community that went into the creation of the music and this particular performance. For me, the reinterpretation of the classic "Why" was paradigm changing in its comment on the process of questioning and the development of faith. We are presently using the DVD in Bible study at our local church and the live performances add a greater depth to the message of the songs and the following discussion. Since Card writes so closely from Holy Scripture we are able to use the songs as keys to create an open discussion that is moving and powerful.

A Call to Community -- a Call to Worship,
By Tim Morgan (Maryland, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scribbling in Sand: Best of Michael Card - Live (Audio CD)
I normally don't like live albums. But I've been a Michael Card fan for many years, so I knew I would get it anyway. I'm certainly glad that I did. "Scribbling in the Sand" features some of Michael's best songs, which he and the friends that join him on the project, play and sing with passion. It's a special treat to hear Michael's song "Immanuel" song as a duet with his longtime friend Steve Green, another whom I've been a fan of literally all my life. There is no songwriter today, yet alone a singer/songwriter, who has such a deep and profound insight into scripture and the heart of God. So many Christian songs today are about making us feel good about ourselves. But Michael Card is like a prophet crying out in the wilderness, and his songs never fail to point out the grace and love of God, and to maintain a proper perspective on who He is, and on who we, as believers, and as humans, stand in relationship to Him. "Scribbling in the Sand", like all of Michael's music, is a call to community, a call to fellowship, a call to service, and a call to worship the God Who created us, Who saves us, and Who loves us.
