5.0 out of 5 stars The Script are rewriting the playbook...
Adding to the previous reviews: The Script, hailing from Dublin, are calling themselves a Celtic Soul band. Two of the band members, Danny O'Donoghue and Mark (sometimes Marc) Sheehan were members of a boy-band called Mytown in the late 1990s, and Mark is purported to be one of the top choreographers in Ireland. 3.0 out of 5 stars Following The Script
This Irish Trio have certainly taken flight with this No. 1 album in the UK and Ireland. The hit singles 'We Cry' and 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved' are certainly well-crafted pop ditties and if you like these, you will like the album. Nice melodies, nice production and that for me is the problem. Everything is too nice and clean. A more 'live' feel to the rockier numbers...

The hit singles 'We Cry' and 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved' are certainly well-crafted pop ditties and if you like these, you will like the album. Nice melodies, nice production and that for me is the problem. Everything is too nice and clean. A more 'live' feel to the rockier numbers like 'Talk You Down' might have given the album more 'edge'. Nevertheless, a fine debut and suggests that there is more to come from this talented trio.

I find this interesting, in that they gave up the dancing completely, refocused on songwriting and playing, and are probably about to break huge in the states. Mytown got a huge advance and flopped badly, despite a lot of help from big US producers. The main dance numbers were very derivative, but the ballads were good. You could see and hear the talent in their videos (go on YouTube).

My HS age son has been playing The Script's songs for his friends and they are all going crazy on iTunes and YouTube.com, and god-knows-where-else, since they can't buy the album in the US yet.

Great vocals from the three official bandmates, including the drummer Glen Power, very catchy songs with soul, rap, reggae, hints of U2, and some very smart lyrics. We Cry's cool rap/soul foundation and political lyrics grab the kids hard enough to get them to listen to the great ballads of Breakeven (amazing chorus) and The Man Who Can't Be Moved. I found 'If You See Kay' pretty on the surface but a little cloying... the lyric refers to the singer as sweet f.a. without Kay, meaning he is nothing, or sweet f*&K-all, a common UK term (also the title of the old Sweet song). If You See Kay, also spells out the word (F_U_C...), if you catch my drift, so I feel they got a little too clever here, ruining the sentiment for me.

The best thing about The Script though are their amazing live performances. Danny changes up the songs virtually every time he delivers one live, and I have a lot of versions I prefer to the albums. Check out their appearance on Live at Abbey Roads on Sundance, or some of their live performances on balconies, tv shows, etc. on YouTube. They are gonna blow up in the US. Good looking kids, with great songs, great vocals, great performances. How can they miss...The Script is already written in platinum. One day they should drop the instruments and dance a little, too...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Script, February 14, 2009
This review is from: Script (Audio CD)
I saw this band on a "Live at Abbey Road" segment on the Sundance channel. They are fantastic! They performed "We Cry" and "A Man Who Won't Be Moved" and the songs just wouldn't get out of my brain. I looked online and found some interviews and video's of this Irish Band and was hooked. I love this CD and highly recommend it to anyone.

I saw The Script live W/Adelle as a Mother's day gift in Philly at the Electric Factory! I already adored Adelle. The Script's sound was amazing and the lyrics touched me in major ways. This is a very talented group of musicians. Easy listen, funk, rock, r&b,a little country vibe. Most excellent!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A new sound, April 4, 2009
This review is from: Script (Audio CD)
I first heard of The Script from commercials on MTV. The short sound clip caught my attention right away. After hearing it a couple of times, I was convinced I should buy the cd. When I researched the band, I realized that the lead singer was formerly in a band of which I also own a cd. So really, this is a comeback story... lead singer Danny has hit the scene with a new sound, gaining more popularity and singing from his soul. The songs are original, and the band claims to not follow a "formula". Indeed, when looking at the lyrics for their hit single "The man who can't be moved" it reads like a story. There isn't even a chorus that is repeated.

This band has been compared to U2 or Maroon5, but I think they are entirely different. The soulful singing of lead singer Danny reminds me of Robin Thicke's original album before he crossed over to r&b music. The background vocalists of The Script also play a key role in the songs. The general music melodies and beats are playful and uplifting despite the serious or melancholy content of the lyrics.

I would say the target audience for this band is ages 15-35, and the songs are powerful enough to create an excellent live show. Check for clips online of their live performances; they are amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut from a Band with Staying Power, December 6, 2008

A mighty debut from a mighty Dublin trio. Yes, folks, there's more to the Irish music scene than U2. There, I said it. I know there will be considerable comparisons made to the Celtic quartet, especially when the lead singer's high register may remind the listener of Bono and the melodies have a hint of Edge-esque sound to them. It would be ridiculous for there not to be a certain modicum of influence and inspiration by one of the world's biggest bands and clearly Ireland's main musical export. But The Script offer an instantly pleasing sonic experience with accessible tunes and lyrics. The vocals are moving to the point that even this cynical reviewer finds a thaw of the heart and I have the infectious melodies linger sweetly in my head for hours after the mp3 player goes off. now, if this band would only tour America so I could see them live, I would be perfectly sated!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic First Effort, January 6, 2009

This is a terrific first effort by this three-man Celtic soul/pop band. I discovered them through their appearance on the Sundance Channel's Abbey Road series, where they performed "We Cry" and "The Man Who Can't Be Moved." Loved them both instantly and tried to find the CD, which apparently is not available in the U.S. The quality of the songs drops off a bit by the end of the CD, but the first six or so are outstanding. Great, soulful vocalist, tight drumming and solid guitar and keyboard work. A real treat and I can't wait for the second offering.

4.0 out of 5 stars The next big thing?, September 3, 2008
By
This review is from: Script (Audio CD)
The Script is a 3 man band from Ireland largely touted in the UK as the next big thing (their CD has topped the UK album charts). Two of its members, Danny O'Donoghue and Mark Sheehan used to be producers and worked with Teddy Riley, the Neptunes, Darkchild and Dallas Austin in the past. This R&B influence is readily apparent in their Pop/Rock sound which some have compared to Maroon 5.

Opening cut "We cry" is a catchy acoustic song with Hip hop beats and soulful vocals from Danny and haunting harmonies. Similar is the lovely "If you see Kay". The more upbeat "Before the worst" is another extremely catchy tune with a spitfire vocal delivery in the verses, while the acoustic based "Breakeven" features yearning heartfelt vocals.

Current single (and UK #2 hit) "The man who can't be moved" a chugging Coldplay-style midtempo song about heartbreak. Also channelling Chris Martin and the lads is the chiming "The end is where I begin" with nice tempo shifts. "Rusty halo" is a Police-style rocker, the acoustic ballad "I'm yours" is more stripped than the other songs, and closing is the atmospheric ballad "Anybody there".

Catchy, well crafted and produced songs. The next big thing? I dunno about that, but it will be interesting to see where they will go next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album and grows on you with each listen, March 26, 2009
This review is from: Script (Audio CD)
Some of the songs are downers/sad but they don't detract from the experience. The do sound a lot like The Fray and to a lesser degree Maroon 5, but this album is much more cohesive and with staying power than what those two bands last put out.
