Christian metal's finest hour,
This review is from: Scrolls of the Megilloth (1992 U.S. Release) (Audio CD)
This is Mortification's second album which was originally released in August of 1992. It is their follow to the 1991 self titled debut.
This disc contains full on death metal with hardly any thrash influences present and incorporates some grindcore and doom influences. This is considered by many fans as the band's best work and is certainly their heaviest material to date. The album begins with night noises to create a rather dark and sort of eerie atmosphere. Then the faint sound of drums works its way in and gets progressively louder with each pounding beat which then leads into a sinister Drop D tuned riff. This is the opening track appropriately titled Nocturnal. The rest of the album flows very well with alot of nice tempo changes to keep the listening experience interesting. Steve Rowe utilizes a rather frightening grind baritone death growl that is double layered as well as being accompanied by shrieking background vocals from both Michael Carsile and Jayson Sherlock. Also Steve's bass playing prowess comes through very strong throughout the entire album as it is both clearly audible and skillful. Michael Carsile's rhythm work is aggressively executed yet precise. In fact, enough to even make up for the lack of guitar solos on this album as he is more experienced as a rhythm genius instead of a lead player. And of course you have the world renowned Jayson Sherlock behind the drum kit. His incredibly fast and accurate blast beats and double bass kicks are actually one of the highlights of this release as a whole. His remarkable changes in tempo are among the best this subgenre has to offer. The production, although not stellar, still holds up pretty well for an early 90's death metal offering. My favorites are Nocturnal, Terminate Damnation, Eternal Lamentations, and Necromanicide. The album ends with an 11 minute mid tempo epic titled Ancient Prophecy which I think ends the album perfectly. In conclusion, Scrolls of the Megilloth is a vital piece of extreme metal history in the realm of Christian metal as well as the secular scene. Get this if you enjoy good quality old school death metal whether you concur with their profound Christian beliefs or not.

Mortification's best CD,

I remembered picking this up in 1992 and I'm glad I did just as glad to see this re-released and remastered, which does this album justice. Too bad the bonus tracks were taken from Live Planetarium and not previously unreleased material. This is worth picking up even if you own the original for production alone.

Best Classic Christian Death Metal,
By
This review is from: Scrolls of the Megilloth (Audio CD)
Back in the days hearing of a christian metal band was rare but christian death metal, now that was even funny to some. But this guys had a huge following in Europe and "down below"(AUSTRALIA) so I had to check them out and boy, I was not dissapointed. They were really extreme for a christian band and they were good. "Scrolls of the Megulloth" will turn out to be a christian death metal classic and a must have for any respectable metalhead.

Mortification: Scrolls, the Best Death Metal Album Ever,
This review is from: Scrolls of the Megilloth (1992 U.S. Release) (Audio CD)
The best death metal album ever roars to life, and goodbye Satanism! Steve Rowe's bass guitar actually counts as a 2nd rythym guitar, the blastbeats are finally here, Mortification blows away any death metal group ever, no holds barred! I would've liked some lead solos, but, you can't have everything, where would you put it, right? This is a Nuclear Blast CD, so they had to deliver the goods to compete. At the time this came out, few people knew they were a Christian band until the fans read the lyrics, then they were promptly kicked off of Nuclear Blast Records. Awesome! Amazing compositions reign throughout; lots of creepy sound effects ooze through. Even if you don't like Christian metal, you have to recognize the super-heaviness and intensity of this record. Buy it! You won't be sorry.

Metalmind comes through again in remastering the classic Scrolls of the Megilloth from Mortification. The remaster on 24 gold bit cd cd sounds amazing. Very crisp and louder than the original. This was death metal w/christian lyrics, since they were born again christians. You would never know that by listening to the brutal nature of the music.

Great death metal album with fast guitars, intense double bass drumming and gutteral vocals. The production is far from great but the music holds its own. Definitely one of Mort's best cd's. Mort's sound shifted after this album being they were unsure of the future of death metal at the time and didn't want to be swallowed up. However this album is pure death metal. The lyrical themes are interesting dealing with subjects about the occult, terminal illness, afterlife, and biblical texts(of course). I got this album when I was about 14, my mom found it in a discount rack at The Wall(now known as FYE). I had the self titled album and played it all the time. I was blasted into orbit when I heard this one, it had a major impact on me back then. I recommend fans of death metal check this album out, as long as you are open-minded and value musical quality over intolerance toward personal belief.

This was where it all started for me: a twenty year love affair with death metal, and it was a bunch of Christians who got me into it. Mortification's "Scrolls" has to be among the hallowed classics of Christian death metal. Even a decade or more later, and it is still some of the best death that I have heard.
If there were more stars available, I would happily have loaded this CD with them all. Massive, low grind vocals coupled with some hard-hitting guitars and drums make this album simply a must for anyone into Christian music of a more "extreme" kind. Unlike some of their later stuff, this CD is pure grinding death. It is unpretentious and in your face. Oh, and the band is not too subtle with the lyrics, either, as you would expect of any death metal band worth listening to. Great CD, and great message!
