2.0 out of 5 stars Very choppy, unengaging Christmas Romance, October 19, 2005
By
This review is from: Miss Scrooge (Under The Mistletoe) (Silhouette Romance) (Paperback)
From the back cover:

What Miss "Bah Humbug" Needed: A Sexy Dose of Christmas Spirit.

Christmas was coming, and Casey Tucker got grumpier by the minute. Why couldn't do-goodger Gabe Wheeler just let her spend this darned season alone? But being with Gabe soon had her warming to the idea of goodwill toward men--well, one man in particular.

Gabe knew Casey was his last hope of giving his extended family a holiday. However, he had more personal reasons for creating their own Christmas magic. He'd suspected all along that the icy Miss Scrooge had a heart. What he hadn't expected was losing his own!

And my review:

This book was very, very choppy. Each scene lasted about half a page, sometimes even less than that. There were a few that lasted a little longer than a page, but just as you were starting to get drawn into the story, the section would end abruptly. I was never able to get drawn into the book. The characters were not very well drawn, and there was almost no prose in the book. There were pages of just dialogue; you ended up having to go back and count the lines so you knew who was talking (odd lines of dialogue: him, even ones: her). This was very annoying and further distacted from the plot.

Also, even though this book was 187 pages, each page had huge margins, so that there was very little text on each page. This meant that 187 pages was more like 90. I read the whole thing in under and hour, and even for a speed-reader like me, that's a pretty short story. Not that I have anything against short stories - some of my favorite works are novellas.

There was nothing offensive in the book, which is why I gave it two stars instead of one. It was squeaky clean, no sex, if that's what you're looking for. But there was also no sensuality, either. It's like: 'He kissed her.' End of scene. Well, give me a little something to work with! Did his kiss make her breathless? Make her want to throw her arms around him? Make her want anything? She's falling in love, yet his kiss doesn't do anything for her? C'mon, I thought this was supposed to be a romance novel!

Glad I only paid 10 cents for this, but even so, I won't be keeping it!
