Not Worth It!,
By "cswm" (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scuba Divers Sign Language Manual (Spiral-bound)
This low quality spiral bound notepad of cheap drawings contains some of the most ridiculous and non-intuitive signs I've ever seen. Some of them are just plain wrong, in my opinion. The 5% of the book that is of any value is, in my experience, common knowledge from basic open water training. I expected a book of signs that makes use of common expressions that transcend spoken language, at least in the western hemisphere, and can be easily understood by a buddy team that does not have much experience diving together. The book should be called The Smiths Sign Language Manual and not Scuba Divers Sign Language Manual because I think the authors are the only ones who understand it. In summary, I feel it's a poor attempt to facilitate communication underwater and is not worth the price!

The signs are all very intuative and very useful. Only issue is that your buddy really needs to know them too.

Actual ASL (American Sign Language) Signs!,
This review is from: Scuba Divers Sign Language Manual (Spiral-bound)
I use this book on all of my dive trips, it has really come in handy. The signs are adapted from ASL (American Sign Language) and they work topside too!

Nice overview of the diving signals, very compact so easy to carry around when going on scuba holiday. If it comes down to the fun factor I prefer Scubasigns which features photo's instead of graphics.

If you are a SCUBA diver, you probably know most of these underwater hand signs. You will probably find lots of entries that are not consistent with what you were taught. I can accept this. But isn't the most useful environment for a pocket book on underwater hand signs...under water? Try it with this and watch your loose-leaf paper pages float away. So much for leaving only bubbles. Also, hiring a professional illustrator would not have been a horrible idea, since the book by nature is mostly...illustrated.
This is one Amazon book I should have returned. If there were underwater iPods, this could be the perfect app.

A Great Handbook,
By A Customer
This review is from: Scuba Divers Sign Language Manual (Spiral-bound)
This handbook is fun, yet very important! It is fun to practice the signs, but I've also learned many emergency signs for diving, I feel more secure knowing that my buddy understands me underwater.

Sign Language Manual,

This review is from: Scuba Divers Sign Language Manual (Spiral-bound)
Has the standard underwater sign language, nothing extravagent. Has about 160 words so maybe a few more words than other books of this sort. I like the waterproof cover with the spiral bounding.

The is a great little book to tell you how to communicate wit your fellow dirvers. This book goes far beyond just simple common communcation like "Are You OK". I recommend this book for those who are serious divers.
