Maybe the best book on sculling ever written..,
By
This review is from: The Sculler at Ease (Paperback)
I have always believed that if you buy a book, and learn at least ONE significant thing from it, you got your money's worth. In this case, you get a whole treasure chest of payback. The coverage of hand positioning alone makes this a must for any library on rowing / sculling. Frank is a well known local Seattle coach and former Olympic coach. I live in Seattle, and everyone knows of him. You simply won;t go wrong if you are trying to learn or improve yourself. Buy it -- you'll like it!
PS. you can get it direct thru Lake Washington Rowing in Seattle. Just give them a call. Don't overpay for a used copy when it is available new.

His knowledge in rigging and sculling is second to none.,
This review is from: The Sculler at Ease (Paperback)
I don't think I've encountered another book relating to rowing that more concisely covered the basics of sweep and sculling, in additional to rigging your boat correctly for your comfort and performance. A first class read!

The author is not merely knowledgeable about sculling, he is incredibly wise. You will look at many aspects of what you are trying to do in a different, magically illuminated way. Mr. Cunningham shares so many gems that I can't even outline them. This is the third book on sculling that I've read, and while the others were good, I now have a new standard for 'great'. This one is great. I will be reading this, and referring to it, over and over for years to come. Highly recommended.

The Zen of Sculling,

This review is from: The Sculler at Ease (Paperback)
Like the little red book for golf, this book represents practical coaching on technique and a path to enlighted sculling. Very good illustrative examples, clear philosophy on strong sculling, and an obvious expertise spanning decades which comes through in the writing.

In the fall of 1972 I learned to row in a series of progressively narrower wooden boats. After almost forty years of rowing, this book taught me more than a few things, and reminded me of some that I had forgotten. The descriptions of the fundamentals and details of sculling and rowing are excellent but to me, the greatest value is that the reader finishes with a feeling for the essence of time well spent on the water. This is far more than a "how to" book.

Multi-leveled read,

This book is exactly what all technical rowing books should be like. Frank uses a variety of analogies to help with comprehension. He also defines proper technique based on 1) Maintaining a steady waterline 2) Minimizing movements that put energy anywhere except in propelling the boat 3) Basic physics, and of course 4) Getting maximal boat speed.
He has another book, "Ask Frank," which you can only get through Lake Washington Rowing Club. I recommend calling them to get a copy if you enjoy this book.
