This book reassesses the sculpture of Jacob Epstein, one of the major figures of 20th-century British sculpture, who led the return to direct carving. His pioneering use of primitive sculpture as a basis for simplifying form and endowing his art with a sexual frankness and symbolism kept him in the center of controversy. Epstein is known best for his genius as a portrait sculptor; his sitters included Joseph Conrad, Albert Einstein, G.B. Shaw, and Winston Churchill. His other sculptures and monumental commissions are uneven in quality but always convey a brilliant sense of power, humanity, and spirituality.
